The Title says it all!

This really is a complete study in modern drumset playing. The key word to this book is APPLICATION. Every exercise can be applied used. Recommended for Intermediate players who are ready to supercharge their playing to the next level.
The book starts with rudiments and their application to the drumset. Moves into some nice hand development excercises. Then covers the Rock, Funk spectrum with a lot of focus on Linear Grooves. Some Jazz Indepedence, Latin, and Afro-Cuban are next. Therer's some really nice and hard to find sections on world music rhythms (Greek, African, etc.) The book winds up with a very comprehensive coverage of odd-meter material and over the bar line exercises. The play alongs and DVD are nice too!

its a good DVD. It just doesn't break the beat down for you. He just plays it once and in some sections he only plays one beat instead of going through all of them. If you could read music very good, then you might not need this DVD.

About the Author
Nancy L Craig received an AB in Biology and Chemistry in 1973 from Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania. She received her PhD in Biochemistry in 1980 at Cornell University, where she worked on the role of RecA function in the lysogenic induction of bacteriophage lambda. During postdoctoral work at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1980-1984, she studied the mechanism of bacteriophage lambda site-specific recombination. In 1984, she joined the faculty at the University of California San Francisco and began her studies of the transposition of the bacterial transposon Tn7. She spent a sabbatical in 1989-1990 with Allan Spradling at the Carnegie Institution of Embryology studying P element transposition in Drosophila. In 1991, she moved to The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, where she is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and a Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, and continues her studies on Tn7 transposition. Orna Cohen-Fix graduated from the Tel Aviv University, Israel in 1987 and received a PhD in biochemistry with Zvi Livneh at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, in 1994. After a post-doctoral fellowship at the Carnegie Institution of Washington with Doug Koshland she moved to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases where she is now a Senior Investigator. Her research focuses on two main topics: cell cycle regulation and nuclear architecture, using budding yeast as a model organism. Rachel Green graduated in chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1986 and then completed her doctoral work in biological chemistry in 1992 with Jack W Szostak at Harvard University studying catalytic RNA. She then did postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Harry F Noller at the University of California, Santa Cruz, studying the role played by the ribosomal RNAs in the function of the ribosome. She is currently a Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her work continues to focus on the mechanism of translation. Carol W Greider received a BA from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1983. In 1987, she received her PhD from the University of California at Berkeley where she and her advisor, Elizabeth Blackburn, discovered telomerase, the enzyme that maintains telomere length. In 1988, she went to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory as an independent Fellow and remained as a Staff Scientist until 1997, when she moved to The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She is currently a Professor and Director of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics and her work focuses on telomerase and the role of telomeres in chromosome stability and cancer. She is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences and is the winner of the 2006 Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research with Elizabeth Blackburn and Jack Szostak for the discovery of telomerase. Gisela Storz graduated in biochemistry from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1984 and received a PhD in biochemistry with Bruce Ames at the University of California at Berkeley in 1988. After postdoctoral fellowships with Sankar Adhya and Fred Ausubel, she moved to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development where she is now a Senior Investigator. Her research is focused on understanding gene regulation in response to environmental stress as well as elucidating the functions of small regulatory RNAs. Cynthia Wolberger received her undergraduate degree in Physics from Cornell University in 1979 and a doctorate in Biophysics from Harvard University in 1987, where she worked with Stephen C Harrison and Mark Ptashne on the structure of a phage repressor bound to DNA. She went on to study the structures of eukaryotic protein-DNA complexes as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Carl O Pabo at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, where she is now Professor of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry and Investigator in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Her research focus is on the structural and biochemical mechanisms underlying combinatorial regulation of transcription.

Biology Student's Perspective: It's an okay textbook that gets the job done.

Like the previous reviewers have written, this textbook is great because it is very informative and current, and it contains many figures for each chapter to summarize key concepts. Each chapter has main headings and several subheadings per each section that provide mini summaries for what concepts the following paragraphs will address, and this makes the textbook very easy to navigate through. The "Experimental Approach" sections are a great addition in that they provide information on recent investigations in the laboratory environment that pertain to the concepts discussed in the chapter.

That being said, this textbook does not earn a 5 star rating in my opinion because there are a number of typos and factual errors in some of the chapters. My professor occasionally must inform our class to make changes in the textbook for errors that are more than just typos. For example, in one chapter, it was talking about two genes in chromosome 11 and the descriptions of their functions were reversed. This kind of error is a little bothersome because it suggests that the editors were not knowledgeable enough on the concepts to catch the error.

The biology course that used this book was a nightmare in terms of workload. We had to read about 100 pages of dense text per week. So if you are buying this book for a weed out class, you are going to hate this book. But in fairness, if I liked reading dense scientific books for fun, this book is content packed and explains concepts in extreme depth. Good luck!

I used this for my introductory biology courses at Duke: Intro to Molecular Biology.

This book was beyond helpful with the material. The authors did a great job with being clear and explained everything extremely well. Some chapters may have been a little more verbose than necessary, but all in all one of the better textbooks I've ever used.

Awesome book on portability

This book does a really great job at talking about code portability. It definitely was an eye opener. However, it started loosing me around chapter five so I paused to increase my knowledge of programming and I will return it to later when my programming understanding increases.

A bit out of date

I would not recommend this book for an experienced programmer. If you know that sizeof(int) can vary, CRLF vs LF differences on Windows and Unix, and what little-endian is to network programming then you are already know enough to not need this book.

But if you are new to C/C++ programming or a student, then this book is likely a good read. The majority of the book builds awareness of portability issues, programming in the large, and common tools for professional programming (in the context of C/C++).

In 2011, I find that most of my C an C++ compatibility issues across operating systems are largely resolved by using STL and including . The latter was not standard in 2005 (when the book was published) as it is today. As such, the book spends time explaining issues that are easily resolved by relying on these include files and libraries. There is a framework library implemented in the book called "Posh" (Portable Open Source Harness) that repeats much of along with some functions that handle endian-ness and floating point variations between processors. Ironically, the book fails to mention Boost, which is a popular starting point for portable C++ development.

The harder C/C++ compatibility issues aren't easily resolved with header file macros. The real challenges of portable coding come from the fact that graphics, threading, I/O, networking, and APIs for making system calls vary widely between different flavors of Unix, Linux, and Windows. To which the book makes an effort to raise attention to, but very little effort on actually solving. The chapter on networking is 6 pages and doesn't go beyond declaring #defines for the subtle differences between Winsock and Unix sockets. Good luck trying to reconcile ePoll and IOCP, or the difference socket ioctl calls between platforms. The book rarely goes deep on any specific area of programming.

For too long risk practitioners, as a whole, have underplayed the role that people risk can have in an organisation. Given that the major events of the global financial crisis of 2007-2009 were a result of people, both in senior and junior positions, making poor decisions for a variety of reasons, it is time that people risk is given much more prominence. And it's not just a matter of risk culture, as McConnell and Blacker successfully argue. More attention needs to be paid to making a more robust decision making process, especially at senior levels. For the practitioner, this book offers more than an overview of the risk and some case studies; a framework for managing people risk, and proposals for increasing the quality of people risk management from the Boardroom to the individual worker make a valuable resource. Dr. Keith Blacker is an expert in risk management with nearly thirty years' experience. A former lecturer at Henley Management College, UK,�he has also�served as a consultant�to a range of major banking and insurance companies internationally.

Dr. Patrick McConnell�taught at Macquarie University Applied Finance Centre (MAFC) in Sydney, Australia and at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland delivering masters level risk management courses. With over thirty years' experience in IT and risk management, he has been consulted by a number of major banks and corporations.

A well-written survey of ways to think about Compliance

The first point is that this book has nothing to do with risk management. The authors begin by defining their topic as "the risk of loss due to the decisions and non-decisions of people," or more simply, that "people should do the right thing and follow the rules that are laid down for them, but sometimes they don't." Of course, this is what everyone else calls "Compliance."

The authors are describing a danger and discussing how to minimize it. Risks are two-sided, and risk management is the study of how to select the optimum level, like a sports team gambling with aggressive tactics when behind, and using conservative defensive tactics when ahead. Risk is not good or bad, it's something you dial up or down to accomplish a goal. The authors are concerned almost only with one-sided uncertainties that you would never dial up (there are two brief discussions of upside in the latter chapters of the book).

There is a vibrant literature on people risk management. It addresses questions like how to encourage innovation while ensuring efficient execution by the book; how to take advantage of diversity in the workplace and offer employees flexibility, while keeping enough standardization that processes work; how to build teamwork without groupthink; and so on. It is a mathematical field drawing on neuroscience, behavioral game theory, and experimentation. You will not find any of that mentioned here.

Related to the issue above, the book focuses (again with two significant exceptions) on studying disasters and asking why they occurred. This is useless for risk. If you look at people who die of lung cancer, you'll find that many of them visited doctors, had lung x-rays, had chemotherapy and were smokers. That observation is not helpful. If you want to study risk, you have to go the other way, you have to look at smokers and non-smokers and see what happens to them. Assigning blame after a disaster is not risk management.

What the book does provide is a survey of about a dozen ideas for combating white collar crime, making sure employees follow legal and regulatory rules and avoiding disasters caused by people issues like poor communication, infighting or bad incentives. Most of these are written in consultant-speak -- lots of big words, heat maps, pyramids, charts with arrows; not so much clear instructions or falsifiable predictions. But having seen a few of these in the original, this book will save you a lot of time and aggravation it has slimmed the presentations down and translated them halfway into English. There really is some useful insight in some of these chapters, and some empirical evidence as well.

An example of the worst of the book is:

"Employing the ISO vocabulary (Guide 73), People Risk Management (PRM) is here defined as 'coordinated activities to direct and control an organization with regard to risk (and in this context, People Risk)'"

Here you see a circular definition, that appears to be sourced to the International Organization for Standardization. But the referenced guide is only a dictionary, the authors just took the definition of "management" and appended "People Risk" to it. The quotes are misleading as the guide says nothing about People Risk, nevertheless it is cited nine times in the book for fake authority. And the passage also illustrates the book's overfondness for initialisms.

Then it gets worse. That quote is followed by:

"The key word here is coordinated; implying that People Risk Management is not itself a directing activity but one that assists others, especially the board and senior executive, to direct and control the organization's approach to People Risk."

So the entire definition above is upended. For some reason, the fact that the activity is coordinated means the People Risk Managers don't in fact direct or control anything as the original definition specifies, they're just advisors to the people who can pay the highest consulting rates. There's more circularity, we still have no idea what People Risk is (if you recall, that's what this passage is supposed to be telling us) but we do know the authors will not take responsibility for anything, they will merely assist in some nebulous function. Also note that the authors fail to use their own initialism even in the sentence immediately following its definition.

However, it quickly becomes apparent what's going on. The next sentence tells us that People Risk Management will be big and expensive, and require outside consultants. It turns out that its remit is not just people's behavior or decisions as their definition claimed, but Health and Safety (because people might get hurt), Human Resources (because Humans is another word for People?), Fraud (not a department in any company I know, but why not?), Financial Accounting (because some accounting judgments involve assessing risk?), Procurement (because it's managed by people?), Compliance (of course) and Legal (also concerned with controls and decisions). It turns out People Risk Management means poking your nose into anything in the company that has to do with People, Risk or Management; three well-chosen words for someone who wants to opine about everything but take responsibility for nothing.

On the good side, Chapter 4 has extensive and varied case studies, Chapter 8 has some interesting material that goes beyond enforcing the rules to discuss how to design organizations that avoid errors without sacrificing innovation and Chapter 10 is a solid account of traditional Compliance tools with some interesting extensions. The remaining chapters have nuggets of useful information, but few consistent veins, and a lot of dross.

Overall, I think this book is a decent overview of some academic and consultant research into the Compliance function. It won't teach you to be a Chief Compliance Officer, for that you need to know what the rules are and how to design policies. But it can help a Compliance professional think about how to enforce the rules and policies in positive ways.

Invaluable insights into people in the context of risk

This is a comprehensive review of that most important - and intangible - subject: people risk. It examines the factors that affect risk taking by both individuals and groups, including Boards, and considers a whole range of circumstances in which it went wrong and why.

The authors then use these learnings to consider what constitutes good risk-aware decision making and how to make it happen. They go on to examine healthy risk cultures, boardroom behaviours, and roles and responsibilities for effective people risk management.

An illuminating read!
