A disappointing book

As someone who lived through the Apartheid years in South Africa, this book looked as if it would be a fascinating read. All the blurb and the set-up suggested some very revelatory reading and I sped into the book once purchased. What a disappointment on a number of levels. Firstly the "revelations" were not really that interesting. Secondly, I found that the book did not really grapple with the moral issues which faced the author. I suspect that she does not have the intellect or appreciation of what happened during those years to really grapple with them and then express them herself. If this were so we would have found a really disturbing retrospective account of the moral dilemmas that she faced and her "baring of the soul", as promised, would have carried a level of conviction which this book never rose to.
Probably the most moving and "real" episode of her life was the writing about the loss of her child. Here I could relate to her emotions. I am afraid in the rest of the book I could not. A very disappointing experience.

About the Author
The late Murray R. Spiegel received the M.S. degree in physics and the Ph.D. in mathematics from Cornell University. He had positions at Harvard University, Columbia University, Oak Ridge, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and served as a mathematical consultant at several large companies. His last position was Professor and Chairman of Mathematics at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Hartford Graduate Center. He was interested in most branches of mathematics, especially those which involve applications to physics and engineering problems. He was the author of numerous journal articles and 14 books on various topics in mathematics.

Excellent study guide (a professor recommends it)

I've used some version of this book in my corporate finance classes (graduate and undergrad) for almost 20 years now. It's a comprehensive problem set, and it works with just about every finance textbook. This is the best review guide out there. And it's cheap, too. I've gotten some real positive comments about this in my teaching reviews from students, too.

I think some folks may misunderstand the value of the book. It's valuable because it helps YOU learn to work problems and gives YOU practice working problems and learning concepts in context. The focus is on YOU. YOU working problems. YOU applying concepts. Unfortunately, that seems to be missed by some.

This book has almost everything you need to learn the basics of finance at an undergraduate level. And it can't hurt for those of you who are coming into an MBA or MS Finance program with a less-than-ideal background from your undergrad "experience." A tremendous amount of knowledge per invested $.

Good info. but many calculation and formula errors

If I could I would give this book zero (0) stars. This book was written by two PhDs one was a CPA), in its 3rd edition and is well organized. Although there is some very good information in it, I found calculation and formula errors. I was using the book for an online, college Time Value of Money class and the errors made my learning process a little harder. Because this is an outline type book and because it is in its 3rd edition, I didn't expect to find any errors.

From a novice who wants an overview of what Financial Management is all about and what ALL it includes, along with solved problems, this book is a great reference. It is expected for you to know/understand the concepts, without much of visual aids. Because of its simplicity, it is also a good, quick reference desk copy. I plan to use the book at an undergraduate level (third and fourth year) in 2012. I have liked and used Schaum series book for decades.

The Title says it all!

This really is a complete study in modern drumset playing. The key word to this book is APPLICATION. Every exercise can be applied used. Recommended for Intermediate players who are ready to supercharge their playing to the next level.
The book starts with rudiments and their application to the drumset. Moves into some nice hand development excercises. Then covers the Rock, Funk spectrum with a lot of focus on Linear Grooves. Some Jazz Indepedence, Latin, and Afro-Cuban are next. Therer's some really nice and hard to find sections on world music rhythms (Greek, African, etc.) The book winds up with a very comprehensive coverage of odd-meter material and over the bar line exercises. The play alongs and DVD are nice too!

its a good DVD. It just doesn't break the beat down for you. He just plays it once and in some sections he only plays one beat instead of going through all of them. If you could read music very good, then you might not need this DVD.
