About the Author

Oleg Pianykh received his graduate training in Applied Math and Computer Science, but has been fascinated by medical imaging since his early student years. This led to his first appointment at Louisiana State University Medical Center in 1998, and has kept him in the medical field ever since – as a developer, researcher, faculty member, business owner, and clinical project manager. These diverse endeavors have helped Dr. Pianykh to learn about DICOM imaging from many various and sometimes unexpected angles. His experiences range from the ground work in DICOM workgroups and committees to hands-on imaging projects in remote community hospitals. In August 2005, soon after being appointed Chief Information Officer for Louisiana Healthcare Network, Dr. Pianykh had to work on rebuilding the statewide PACS grid that was devastated by hurricane Katrina. A year later, he joined Harvard Medical School, where he serves as a clinical faculty member and researcher, teaches medical informatics, and heads DICOM imaging projects. Dr. Pianykh participates in many international projects, provides consultation to DICOM users and companies, and enjoys every single aspect of practical medical informatics.

Very worthwhile read

I very much enjoyed this book, which was a surprise to some extent -- although I was eager to learn about DICOM I fully anticipated a very dry, dull book. Luckily that is not the case. Moreover, the detailed explanations were great for me as a software developer now working on a DICOM application.

Part I - Introduction to DICOM provides a light but good overview.

Part II - DICOM and Clinical Data, after some brief history, gets right into the guts of what DICOM looks like, down to the bytes in a DICOM object. Lots of great stuff there. There's also some excellent information on medical images, compression, video and overlays.

Part III - DICOM Communications does a great job explaining the networking half of the DICOM standard. This is not something I've needed to know much about but was readable and definitely adds to my understanding. I can see that being useful in various application design decision in the coming years.

Part IV - DICOM Media and Security makes clear the media sections of the standard were every bit as crazy as I thought them to be. The security stuff treats anonymization/de-identification well too.

Part V - Advanced Topics is a fairly wide ranging set of topics. The teleradiology chapter was useful although I felt a little thin..although there is some good advice in there I felt there was also some confusing, contradictory and vague information. The coverage of the work the author did with PACS etc. in a post-Katrina New Orleans is pretty eye opening. The DICOM software development chapter was a little bit of a disappointment to me, although I acknowledge it is but one chapter rather than the entire focus of the book. Mostly deals with things to consider if you were to write DICOM software at level of being able to read/write DICOM files and communicate with DICOM compliant AEs. That advice is useful...but I would imagine more of us are utilizing libraries like dcm4che, ClearCanvas etc. and writing applications on top of those -- there's not really any advice for folks in that situation.

All in all, well worth the price.

One complaint: it's a HUGE shame that the Kindle edition is the 1st edition of the book. You can only (seemingly) get this updated 2nd edition as hardback.

I got good help from the book

I am new to DICOM. The author knows DICOM ins and outs, I learned from him. The book describes the basic and important parts of DICOM, and it is good text book for the beginners. The book also includes the way how to develop DICOM apps, this is very good information for the developers. The author was also responsible for DICOM system recovery after Katrina and he shared his experiences in the book. This is very important information for the hospital IT engineers and DICOM app developers. I like this book very much.

An excellent book for anyone involved with DICOM

Anyone involved in DICOM should have this book. It is written in a manner such that managers, technicians, IT people, and general users can all gain useful knowledge of DICOM. What is missing from other books is the practical knowledge, the problems encountered and the solutions. This book is replete with practical anecdotes.

This is a "must-own" book for anyone who must deal with DICOM & PACS. The author does an excellent job of presenting the basics, and then adding more advanced information in a logical progression. This book replaces all others, in my opinion.

There are 18 chapters. Depending upon the background and interests of the reader, many chapters can be skimmed or skipped. This is also an excellent guide to troubleshooting a DICOM system.

I highly recommend this book.

Book I received was missing page 179,180. Other than that odd fact, it's okay. It provides a good overview of concepts related to internal controls and managerial accounting from an IT perspective. However, it spends too much time on the specifics of SQL and Microsoft Access databases. A significant portion of the book contains references and information concerning those topics, but not enough detail to learn how to use them. It seemed pointless. Either include enough information to allow readers to start to use those tools, or limit the information to just an overview of what Access and SQL do.

Lindquist and Cross also analyze the justices' willingness to expand the Court's power by granting litigants increased access to the courts and overruling the Court's own precedents. In these contexts, Measuring Judicial Activism considers the extent to which these actions are consistent with the justices' ideological predilections.

The Amsterdam Connection

The Amsterdam Connection is a mysterious story. It is about the reporter Kate Jensen who traveled to Amsterdam where her friend, Max, was found dead there. The police in Amsterdam concluded that Max was killed by a pickpocker. But Kate didn't believe. She thought it had something more than that. Then, she decided to prove it by her self and she found that her friend's dead involved with the football club. From this even, Kate thought that even football is fun but it can be dangerous at the same time.

This book is one story that can draw the reader to follow till the end. It makes the reader thinks of the mystery all the time. The reader will guess who is the murderer through the story. However, it is less exciting, when compare to other mysterious books.

‘The Amsterdam Connection’ is quite an interesting book and it is a thriller story. This is about a news reporter Kate who traveled to Amsterdam to find out about the mystery behind her friend Max’s death. The Amsterdam police came to a conclusion that Max was mugged and killed during a mugging incident but Kate didn't believe because Max had asked her to come visit and write about the ‘Rotterdam City Football Club’, soon after that he is killed by someone so decided that there is some person behind her friend’s murder. I liked the character of Kate in this story because she is very interested to find the reason about her friend’s death, also she gave more importance to her friend Max because he saved her life during some criminal reporting situation. I felt few characters are real Kate, Max, Elly and Jos. When it comes to the story of it, this is about how she found the mystery about who killed Max and Jos Van with the help of Elly, Sanchez.

I liked it! Nice short that delivers

I've always been a fan of Gennita Low's military hero books. The only bad things about this novella was the fact its too short and the cheesy title. The story is a fast read that covers a rescue, so you are starting in the middle of a relationship, so there's no real character development, what you have is a snapshot of a story line, and I think its very well done. If you haven't had a chance to pick up one of Gennita Low's full length novels, go for it- I've never read anything bad from this author, This is just a snippet if her writing style.

I like to consider myself fairly advanced at NLHE

I like to consider myself fairly advanced at NLHE. But I kept coming back to the same weakness in my game; the math. I've never been big on math in poker, even though I recognize it's incredibly important. Most of it stems from my weakness at all aspects of math, but also because I could never find a book that clearly explained it to me without becoming overwhelming. When it comes to math I need something simple and also something that grabs and keeps my attention. This book did just that. You get plenty of examples to practice, and even charts and "cheat sheets" to make it even easier. Whether you're an advanced player or a beginner at NLHE I believe this is a book you need to have in your poker library.

Many valuable concepts

It's a quick and easy read lots of solid concepts explained. I liked how it gave you two ways to calculate pot odds: the ratio method and the percentage method. I was only familiar with the ratio method before reading this. My only issue with the book is there are a number of typos. Not necessarily misspellings but using the word "two" when it should have been "to" and other similar scenarios. Just little things like that. Not a big deal but it does make me question how closely some of the material was checked. Either way for such a great price there's no excuse not to read it if you're into playing poker.

Great book. I hope nobody buys this book cause I will have a great advantage over them. The author is well organized. There are great courses in the book. Probability, odds, ratios, risk reward issues, calls, bets, bluffs math issues are tough. This book deals with poker math like nobody else. It is a must to have if you play poker. I will by Alton Hardin's next book for sure
