About the Author
Linda Rief is the author or coeditor of five Heinemann titles, including Inside the Writer's-Reader's Notebook (2007), The Writer's-Reader's Notebook (2007), Adolescent Literacy (2007), Vision and Voice (1999), and Seeking Diversity (1992), as well as the author of 100 Quickwrites (2003). She is an eighth-grade teacher at Oyster River Middle School in Durham, New Hampshire, and an instructor in the University of New Hampshire 's Summer Literacy Institute. She is also a national and international consultant on issues of adolescent literacy. In 2000 she was the recipient of NCTE's Edwin A. Hoey Award for Outstanding Middle School Educator in the English/Language Arts. Her classroom was featured in the series Making Meaning in Literature produced by Maryland Public Television for Annenberg/CPB. Easy to read and packed with ideas that you can ...

I appreciate this book! Easy to read and packed with ideas that you can implement now. Linda Reif shows you how to infuse readers and writers workshop. As a 5th grade teacher, it's always hard to "fit" everything in and sometimes it feels like we can't do everything well- quantity over quality, as we're given curriculum and then expected to teach a 90 minute reading block and 60 minute writing block, along with 60 minute math, science, and social studies blocks. How do we do we fit it all in? It's never occurred to me to use a RWN (readers and writers notebook)- I also loved that she included accountable talk, close reading, student autonomy, peer reviews, conferencing, evaluation, and assessment tips. May be written for a middle or high school 60 minute block, but as an intermediate elementary teacher, I found it golden!

Linda Rief was my middle school teacher - she freed me to overcome multiple obstacles to both writing and reading. She gave me confidence that I had a voice and helped me build the mechanics of writing so that my words would be taken seriously. I loved her as a teacher read her book when I became a middle school language arts teacher.

Can't say enough good stuff about this book. I teach high school English, and this book, along with The Book Whisperer, will change your life if you're open to a good shake-up in your classroom. You can still meet common core requirements, but now you can also encourage and inspire your students, too.

Wow!.... All I can truly say is WOW!

This book is for EVERY woman out there! Whether single, courting, engaged, married, widowed, divorced, and contemplating whether you are called to be married! This book has truly opened my eyes to see the truth about "The One". This book isn't your typical "I want to find me a man. How do I get him" book. This book is for the women who desire to HONOR God in holiness, righteousness,& purity in their heart, in their lives, & in their relationship. It amazes me how so many of the questions we as women face were answered in this book. She gave different testimonies, scriptures, points of view, scenarios, and even heart-wrenching questions. Now, if you are getting this book because you are trying to see if it is going to pat you on the back and make you feel good, trust me, you may not get it. You may get your answer and you may not. But this book is a NEED to have and not just a WANT to have. This book is CENTERED around TRUTH! Biblical truth to be exact, & sometimes, the truth hurts. However, Jesus made it clear that the Truth sets us free- that Truth is HIM! I am grateful I read this book. I loved it so much that I am telling EVERYONE about it!!!! Ladies, if you believe this book isn't for you, please share this with someone you believe it is for. Marriage is a BIG deal in the Kingdom of God. However, it is not the REASON we seek God. I've always known Karolyne Roberts to be a woman of God and to have God's Holy Spirit dwelling within her. After reading this book, it was only a solid confirmation of what was already evident: that she hears from The Lord and she writes when He prompts her to. This book was written for me, married women, single men, the widowed, all people. Her release came at a time in my life in which God was shifting and doing a whole lot of revealing. "The One" Revealed aided me in this huge change in my life, as well as comforted, encouraged, sharpened and equipped me to keep pressing forward despite the changes one may experience in God's plan for their life. Each chapter is filled with God's love, grace, correction and discipline and is literally the best book I've ever read in...awhile. Pray before purchasing and put on some steel-toed boots. You'll need them. Devour each page with an open heart, prepare to be challenged and then go purchase a copy for a friend. It's literally that amazing!

"The One Revealed" deserves more than 5 stars, because it has made an eternal impact on myself and other women, which is what truly matters. I was blown away by Karolyne's book. No matter what season you are in - whether you are single, dating/courting, married, divorced, widowed, searching, dissatisfied, confused, content... this book has the wisdom, encouragement and insight you need at this moment in your life. Karolyne's book doesn't focus so much on asking God for your "Boaz" but seeking God's kingdom and righteousness while believing that all that is in the will of God shall be added to you in His timing. I have so much clarity as to how I should be led by the Holy Spirit and not by my feelings when it comes to relationships. Seriously, every woman should pick this book up and read it if you are looking for answers to questions about God, love, dating, marriage, and the like. As you read this book, you will come to find that it echoes a powerful truth: Jesus is the One, our One and only. It is only through Him that you will know how to date, marry and love the one he has chosen to join you in marriage. Whether it is in His will for you to marry or not, we must be devoted to seeking the One daily and becoming "the one" that we are waiting for, which Karolyne highlights so eloquently in this book. An unforgettable adventure

In this fifth installment of the Tunnels series, most of the main characters are back on the earth's surface. Will, Chester, Elliott and Drake are stationed at a secure remote location, waiting for the next plan of attack. While Will and Chester train physically and mentally under the strict eye of Drake's father, Elliott is embracing her feminine side for the first time in her life. But the blessed quiet and recuperating time won't last long. The Styx army is about to enter a new phase...

The evil Rebecca twins are busy organizing the next step in their plans to take over the world. They are entering the Phase, a special time for their people that only comes around every once in a great while. The first step is to secure a safe and remote location. The second is to use the Dark Light treatments on hundreds of unsuspecting humans to control their minds. The Phase is a messy process, best done without witnesses or resistance. The Styx are building their army to finally stomp out the human race.

But a handful of Styx soldiers don't believe in what their leaders are doing. Eddie, Elliot's father, and his rebels have broken free of the Styx army and are willing to help Drake, Will and the rest defeat these blood-thirsty monsters. They inform our heroes about the upcoming Phase and together organize a plan. Unfortunately, there is a traitor in their midst, someone who will bring demise and danger to the group, leaving them buried alive and slowly running out of oxygen. They struggle and pool all of their meager resources to escape their death tomb. But even then, it's far from finished. In order to save the human race, Will may have to face his fears and return to a place he never thought he would see again: back down the Pore and into the "Land of the Second Sun" located in the very center of the earth.

Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams are gaining a bit of a reputation for dropping staggering bombshells of shock and surprise, and SPIRAL may be the mother lode. The newly introduced Phase is the ultimate shock wave, a grotesque, monstrous atrocity that will rivet readers to the bloody pages in horror. As for the rest of the book, just like the others in the series, it offers nonstop action in the most imaginative plot possible, a quest for both the mind and the heart. They are masters of building suspense, and the torturous wait is always worth it when the truth is finally revealed. The solid and colorful characters are the second stars of the show: vivid, diverse, heroic, brave, daring, evil, twisted, devious, and even a few oddballs. We meet some new personalities, but there are a few goodbyes as well; no one is safe under the hands of these talented and unpredictable authors.

Gordon and Williams also leave some of our heroes dangling in some sticky situations at the end, thus leading up to the series finale, which promises to be a bittersweet farewell to an unforgettable adventure.

Wow...

So I have been following the Tunnels series for about three years now and I'm a huge fan. I don't know where Spiral came from. The authors have really strayed from the family friendly writing that was evident in the other 4 books. There is cursing, inappropriate content, girls trying to seduce guys, Will and Chester talk about getting drunk, ect. Even though the Styx are insects it is still quite disgusting in several parts. Although the plot was epic and the storyline awesome, I was disappointed. Several of my family members and a lot of my friends are all into the series and we were all kinda shocked at the book. My little sisters haven't read it because of the content. If you set aside the negative issues, it is an awesome book. It was gritty and quite gruesome at some parts but all in all was pretty good. It was a little more on the short side though. Only like, 430 pages. I'm sorry but this book just wasn't as up to par with the others. Please make it up in the last book Roderick Gordon! :)

Great Series

Book #5 did not disappoint. There was a lot more action and losses and your learn a very creepy item about the Styx race. Can't wait till Book #6 comes out to find out what happens in the end.

Sten Nadolny (b. 1942) was an historian and filmmaker, before writing four novels and two collections of essays. This fictionalized biography chronicles the life of 19th-century explorer Sir John Franklin (1786-1847), credited with discovering the Northwest Passage. A slow, deliberate, and strange child, Franklin joins the Navy at 14. After many years of seafaring, he becomes governor of Van Diemen's Land, later renamed, by him, Tasmania. Despite his much-needed prison reforms and remarkable humanitarian efforts, Franklin is eventually removed from office and returns to a life of adventure on the sea. Unfortunately, the Franklin that Nadolny gives us is an admirable but oddly colorless character.
