A marvellous read - life changing

A most engaging book. It opened up for me a new paradigm through which to live the Gospel message. Shaia presents four distinct questions being posed to the communities into which each gospel has been written. He argues convincingly that Matthew's gospel is written to a community facing great change after the destruction of the Temple. In this context, Shaia asks questions about how we might move through a time of change, sustained by our faith and the insights of Matthew's Jesus. Mark's gospel asks how to live in crisis. The community of Mark were, under Emperor Nero, imminently facing death. Mark writes into this situation. Shaia shows how this provides us with a guide to face our own crisis. John's gospel is of a garden of joy. Shaia explores how we learn to receive joy, explaining how it often arrives completely unexpectedly, moving us from crisis to delight almost with a blink of the eye. One of the delights of this book is the imperative Shaia presents that we must give of ourselves to bring all to oneness. This is a life of service, living a journey of travelling a path of commitment. Shaia argues that the gospel of Luke addresses this most important question - how do I move on in service? A truly great read. I have also loved the way that Alexander Shaia and his team have provided a Companion Guide to use within a group context to explore how the questions and life-path of this four-path journey of change, suffering, joy and service (which Shaia names as Quadratos) are lived out in our own lives. I have found the Guides a great companion to this book.

Why Four Gospels? A transforming approach

Why five Stars? This book has been personally transformative and has brought new energy to my preaching.

Shaia answers the question about why there are four Gospels and not 1 or more. Yes each tells the same story but in quite different ways. Each was written into a particular socio-cultural situation: Matthew to early ‘followers of the way’ immediately after the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and asks ‘Where is God in change? Mark was written for Christians in Rome who were being persecuted and violently killed for their faith and asks ‘Where is God in suffering?’ Luke (with Acts) is written to growing and thriving Christian communities and asks ‘How do we mature in service?’ John was written to early Christian communities who were becoming increasingly diverse and threatened with internal conflict and develops a vision of unity by asking ‘How do we receive joy?’ The lectionary in use in the majority of Western Christianity takes us on a journey through the three synoptic Gospels using John in the high festivals of faith. In so doing we are taken through a transformative journey through change and suffering to service and joy.

I have found his approach personally transforming and to bring radical new life to my preaching.

A TIMELY BOOK FOR CHRISTIANITY IN THE 21ST CENTURY

I have known Alexander Shaia since he came to New Zealand and have become increasingly aware of the important place he plays at the inter-face of religion and psychology. In this book he brings together the best of scripture scholarship, psychology and Christianity in a way which is life-giving and which assists those who are looking for a deeper understanding of their own lives and the role of the great Christian tradition, in the 21st century. Recently I attended a funeral for a cousin of mine. His death was premature and as well as leaving his wife, he left two magnificent young men, both brought up in Catholicism. They were struggling with its application in their modern lives so I gave them each a copy of Alexander's book in memory of their father. Their comments indicated that they found it extremely helpful and 'why weren't we exposed to this before?". I hope many, many people find out the same thing for themselves. I also hope 'Heart and Mind' may give birth to many communities inspired to live the depth of the Christian mystery in the 21st century. Outdated With Poor Directions

I realize this book was published 7 years ago and public access and ownership changes with time. I was hoping this book was going to be a good resource for off road trips. Unfortunately, I did not find it to be so in February 2017, specially; for Site 91 (Gleeson / Courtland), it is not Gleeson road that you take off Highway 80 as the map indicates, but you will be fine if you follow the road signs to Gleeson. Many of the dirt roads throughout Gleeson and Cpurtland are posted no trespassing. I never saw any sign of Bornite as the author noted or much mineralogy of interest at all on the mine dumps I visited. The map in the book is so generic and non-specific that it was of little use. Site 102 (Helvetia) was worse, the map shows Helvetia cemetery on the right side of Santa Rita Road - it is in fact on the left side of the road. There was one interesting mine that we visited with lots of copper color in the dumps, you will see it to the right of the road near an abandoned bus two miles or so past the cemetery. Whatever roads existed to other mines in the area are either gated private property or are no longer passable. We started down a pipeline road past the abandoned bus but turned around as the road was so overgrown that it was not passable. Site 94 was not much better, the access road shown on the map in the book at milepost 301 and the one to the south are gated and posted no trespassing. I did not try the third access road. I should have done my research with online topo maps and discussion groups rather than this book - which is what I'd suggest you do. Buyer Beware. I have to wonder if the author actually visited these areas close to when the book was published...

Need some up date on this edition

This book is interesting and somewhat helpful. I purchased the 2001 edition in 2009. Some of the directions and sites were not as given, but that is to be expected. It would be nice if the author had some means of being informed of changes.

Some changes that should be of interest to others are: Site 8, pg 32, Desert Roses. There were none to be found even with a walk up to and around the base of Fire Mnt. Site 20: pg 56, Parks Obsidian. Forest Road 141 has been renamed to Government Mountain Road. There is a fence around the "obsidian Tank", but there is no gate and the area is pretty well opened for samples. Site 37, page 102, Winslow petrified wood. Following the dirt road a mile or two after the bridge you will find petrified wood. There are several petrified tree remains off the shoulder of the road, however this is not the colorful petrified wood, but a brownish gray/tan with little if any color.

Site 36, page 100, Joseph City Petrified wood appears now to be a trash site. Small pieces of petrified wood and agate can be found, but be careful of the broken bottles and other trash that has been dumped in the area.

This is a helpful book for finding some of the minerals that are listed.Gem Trails of Arizona

The "must knows" like Muybridge, Eisenstein, Bunuel, Chaplin, Welles and Goddard share the spotlight with our true loves: Tarantino, Scorcese, Spielberg, Lucas, those too cool Coens, "Black Knight" Nolan, David Lynch, Soderbergh. Ackowledging a global view, important, new foreign films also get a nod.

Paradoxically, Padawer has managed to add sophisticated insight to the classic cinema as art/literature teachings by employing a techno aware twist. There's also a fun, hands-on chapter that will make you, too, a movie critic: a how-to guide on writing about film from academic treatise to twitter review. Don't expect to outshine this film analyst anytime soon, tho'.
