It has done so by providing a relatively simple universal tool allowing, for the first time, the detection of endogenous mediators that are present 12 10 in body fluids at concentrations as low as 10- _10- M. The fundamental nature of this discovery and the wide-ranging fall-out of basic and clinical knowledge derived from its application have been acknowledged by the many honors tributed to its pioneers, including the Nobel Prize awarded to Dr. Y ALOW 10 years ago. Although several excellent books have been published during the past decades covering various aspects of RIA methodology, we felt the need, as pharmacologists, for a comprehensive discussion of the methodological and conceptual issues related to the main classes of mediators of drug action and to drugs themselves. Thus, we gladly accepted the challenge provided by the invitation to edit a volume of the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology on Radioimmunoassay in Basic and Clinical Pharmacology. We tried to balance the emphasis placed on more general aspects of the RIA methodology and that on specific mediators.

Structure of the Book This book is divided into 8 chapters, sequenced to give a better understanding of the concepts. Each chapter contains Learning Objectives, Summary, and Solved and Unsolved Questions to aid comprehension of the concepts. The Glossary at the end of the book adds value to the learning. The last two chapters dealing with Cyber Security and Cyber Laws are accompanied by an appendix each. Important topics and concepts have been covered in great detail in the book—including, but not limited to—access control measures, threats, physical security, intrusion detection, cyber security and cyber crime. The 8 chapters together cover the entire syllabus of GBTU’s Information Security and Cyber Laws paper of the BTech course, making the book a student’s ideal companion. A must have

The New Baby series is incredible!
I love the multiracial families and the scenes in the book actually show everyday life. The 2nd book even shows breastfeeding (thank you!!!).
I don't use the text so much as the pictures to tell my son a story. Honestly, my husband really struggles with this idea, so I get where some people would find it difficult.
I simply focus on what I want my son to know to get ready for life with a sibling. We named the toddlers in each book and I can ask questions about what my son sees in the picture or I can tell him a "story". For example "Sam" (what we named the kid in the 2nd book)is sitting on his mommy's lap with the baby for a picture. I might mention that Sam's mommy can hold Sam and the baby at the same time, for a quick cuddle. Or that Sam can walk holding daddy's hand while baby has to be carried because baby can't walk yet. But Sam can! What a big boy Sam is! Or that Sam is smiling as he's helping his mommy give the baby a bath. Sam must really like helping!
You do have to be creative, but these can be AMAZING tools to help your toddler understand what is coming up. I honestly had NOO idea how to explain breastfeeding to my son ahead of time, but with the book it's easy to simply point to the picture and tell him baby drinks mommy's milk just like he used to do before he learned how to eat sandwiches and apples and drink juice. Babies need to drink a lot of milk so they can grow. EASSYYYY!!! Love, love, love these books!

Held her attention longer than her other books!

My daughter loves this series! She's 17 months and we've been reading these together with her to get ready to have another baby. I love how there's very little text to encourage more talking about the pictures, my daughter personally doesn't like her books that have a lot of words to read, it doesn't hold her attention as well at this stage. I call the older child in the books by my daughter's name when we're reading and then ask her where the baby is. She points to it every time! (Except the Waiting for Baby book, she doesn't really understand yet that there's a baby in Mommy's tummy) The illustrations are very beautifully done, and I also love how the baby is nursing since my daughter is too, it's easier to talk about how she might have to share when baby comes. Would definitely recommend the entire series for a big sibling to be!

Bought all 4 of these books to help a 2 year old grandson prepare for a new sibling! GREAT BOOKS!! He loved the pages that covered things he does, and they introduced the concept of "baby" and what the baby would bring to his life. Love that the books are multicultural and gender neutral too!

About the Author
Janette B. Benson is an Associate Dean, Morgridge College of Educationan and Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Denver. She recently served for five years as the Director of the University-wide Office of Academic Assessment and co-chaired the successful University reaccreditation. Dr. Benson’s expertise is in cognitive and sensorimotor development in infancy and early childhood, and her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, The MacArthur Foundation and the March of Dimes. Dr. Benson has published several articles, book chapters and has edited or co-edited several books, including The Encyclopedia of Infancy and Early Childhood Development. She has been the recipient of several awards and honors, including the University of Denver Scholar - Teacher of the Year (1993), the 2000 CASE Colorado Professor of the Year, a Carnegie Scholar, a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, member of the Board of Directors of Shortridge Academy, and the serial editor of Advances in Child Development and Behavior.

Marshall Haith is the John Evans Professor of Psychology at University of Denver. He has also been an NIMH research awardee, director of research at University of Denver, and Guggenehim fellow and visiting professor at University of Geneva, Switzerland. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Psychological Association, and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, he is a member of the Society for Research in Child Development, the International Society for the Study of Behavior Development, and the International Conference for Infant Studies. Formerly the associate editor of the Monographs for the Society of Child Development, he has served on the editorial board of nine scientific journals relating to infant development and behavior. Recipient of the APA G. Stanley Hall Award for distinguished contributions to developmental psychology in 2000 and the SRCD Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award in 2003, he has authored 10 books and over 75 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles on infancy and early childhood development.

About the Author

Arthur C. Danto is professor emeritus of philosophy at Columbia University. He is the art critic for the Nation and has served as president of the American Philosophical Association. His many books include After the End of Art, Nietzsche as Philosopher, and Art in the Historical Present, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award. In 2003, he was awarded the coveted Prix Philosophe.Jonathan Gilmore is assistant professor of philosophy at Yale University. He is the author of The Life of a Style: Beginnings and Endings in the Narrative History of Art.

China is a country ancient as the hills and long used to autocratic governance while America is a young country by comparison, borned and lived democratically. The two countries are as different as chalk and cheese. They are miles apart, literally and figuratively, yet they keep rubbing each other and keeps each other in sight, sometimes in awe, sometimes in contempt, always with suspicion. Warren Cohen has written the fifth edition of his book a year shy of the 40 years since his first edition was published (1971). He begins the story of US-Sino relationship from the mid nineteenth century when America entered China as Britains's junior parrtner in commerce. Cohen covers the role of America during this period in which treaties were being made between China and the Western powers, namely Britain and France. China used America in its efforts to contain if not isolate Britain. America witnessed two rebellions in China - the Taiping rebellion and the Boxer rebellion - and eased its way cautiously through them. When the Japanese and the Russians began their intrusions into China, America once again found itself a useful third party to China, and economic prospects for itself.

That had been the American attitude to China which seemed to be a rehearsal for the later Chinese civil war between the Nationalists under Chinag Kai Shek and the Communists under Mao Tze Tung. From a policy since Roosevelt's discerning but careful approach, America aided Chiang more because it feared communism than it loved the Nationalists. Cohen might be telling a different history today had the Americans gone all out to help Chiang push the communists out; but it realised that that wasn't a task worth the risks. Dean Acheson was reported to have said that he took office as American secretary of state at the time when Chiang Kai Shek was closed to collapse. At that time, Acheson himself was more concerned about creating NATO than to contain communism in Asia. The Nationalists eventually found itself governing Taiwan, keeping the dream of a Republic of China alive but incapable of realization as the mainland grew economically and militarily from the 1960's.

Cohen traces the thawing of the frosty US-Sino relationship in the 1970's and 1980' to the new awkwardness caused by China's repression of human rights activists in China and Tibet, and the supression of major movements like the Falungong. Nonetheless, America was determined not to create open hostility with China and both sides arrived at a quiet compromise when China detained the American reconnaissance plane that had collided with a Chinese fighter plane.

Cohen comes up to date with the situation in the twenty-first century. He identifies the two issues that contibue to divide the two countries. The first is America's continued rejection of communism, and second, America's support for a democratic Taiwan. The problem is that China is adamant that Taiwan must not be accepted internationally as an independent nation. America's response to Chinese intentions will be tricky. When America exerted pressure on China prior to the twenty-first century, it was the moral, economic, and military leader in the world. Now, as Cohen observed, "George W Bush had succeeded where the propagandists employed by Hitler, Stalin and Mao failed: it made the United States a pariah, largely as a result of its invasion of Iraq, its approval of torture in violation of the Geneva Convention, the symbolism of the Guantanamo prison complex, and the appalling photographs of the mistreatment of prisoners at Abu Graib. International public opinion polls recorded widespread unhappiness with the United States, even among its allies - and a broad consensus that Washingtoon posed a greater threat to the world than did Beijing." In this current state, as China expands economically and militarily, what will America's response be, especially when America continues to want a China that is "peaceful, prosperous, open, responsible, and cooperative".

Cohen has provided a clear, concise and up-to-date account of the US-Sino relationship that is also analytical and a joy to read.

A thorough history of America's relationship with China

Foreign relations historian Warren I. Cohen does a masterly job of condensing more than 200 years of Sino-American history (up to the Clinton administration, so not including today's complex fiscal ties) into a brief, readable book. For the most part, his approach is factual and reportorial - Cohen avoids grand sweeps of theory and interpretation. However, to the untrained eye, this book may seem quite confusing: Cohen uses the Wade-Giles system of romanizing Chinese characters, rather than the more familiar pinyin system, and his organization of historic material is only very roughly chronological. Readers will nonetheless acquire a strong sense of the important themes, the major evolutionary stages and the prominent figures involved in the development of Sino-U.S. relations. getAbstract recommends this retrospective account to anyone with a professional, non-academic interest in the history of America's relationship with China.
