Bulky, beautiful, but lacking substance

This is a big and bulky book (11" x 9.5" x 1.7"; weighing 7.4 lbs) but it is beautiful and well made. The cover and pages are of extremely good quality hence the photgraphs and maps are very clear, lively, and colourful. It is comprehensive in listing the main producers in each region across the world and has a chart describing in one sentence each the quality of the six vintages from 2004 to 2009. A book like this required a big team of writers and thus the writing style and quality are not consistent. In many instances, the short information about an individual producer is well written and informative, but in others, the information may only appeal to those looking specifically for those specific notes. For example, the write up on Domaine Arnou-Lachaux is as follows:

"Pascal Lachaux runs the show here. The landholding is principally in Vosne-Romanee and Nuits-St-Georges. The village wines shows excellent typicity and there is an alluring, velvet-textured Les Suchots and some Grand Crus. Pascal places great emphasis on yield, reducing the number of bunches a month before vintage. He also encourages grass between the rows to compete with the vines. He ages some of the wine in 500 litre (112 gal) casks, for the slow oxygenation properties, and combines this with the wines from the traditional burgundy barrels."

Most wines drinkers are likely to encounter only a small fraction of the wines described. It is therefore a book that some may rate as only a three-star, but I rather like it and it seems worthy of a four-star because this is one of the few books one can find names of relatively unknown wines, but there are bound to be names missing. There are other smaller books that might provide more information in a more wieldy form. Dorling & Kindersley's "Eyewitness Companions: Wines of the World" is one of them.

It's About the Bottom Line, Stupid!

First published in 1995 by Oxford University Press, America's Competitive Secret suggests how to utilize women as a management strategy. It was an excellent idea then and an even better idea now as globalization initiatives of American companies increase and intensify. In the Preface, author Judy B. Rosener explains that her book is intended for executives and managers "who want to improve their organization's bottom line, and for women who wonder why their career paths so often seem to be shaped by the fact that they are female." Note the reference to "bottom line." For Rosener, it is prudent to leverage the talents of professional women" inorder to create "more innovative, productive, and profitable organizations." Also, for male executives, the principle of enlightened self-interest is relevant to their own success. It makes absolutely no sense to under-utilize the talents of women professionals, especially as the global economy continues to expand so rapidly and extensively. Rosabeth Kanter agrees: "Whatever the duration and objectives of business alliances,...in the global economy, a well-developed ability to create and sustain fruitful collaborations gives companies a significant competitive leg up." Hence the importance of women.
As Connie Glaser and Barbara Steinberg Smalley suggest in Swim with the Dolphins, the female temperament is better suited than is the male's to concluding "win-win" negotiations, resolving conflicts, reaching consensus, preferring to cooperate and collaborate rather than compete, keeping an open mind, asking direct and relevant but not insulting questions, etc. Rosener describes the female temperament in terms of "consensus building, power sharing, and comfort with ambiguity."
She examines five "stages" through which organizations must proceed if they are to undergo the transformation required by new realities as well as opportunities: Stage One: Staying Out of Trouble Stage Two: We Need to React Stage Three: It's a Case of Survival Stage Four: It's the Right Thing to Do Stage Five: It's Part of Our Culture
Females as well as males within an organization will proceed from one stage to the next at varying speeds and within varying timeframes. Fair enough. However, all must reach Stage Five. Rosener recommends that, from both a strategic and financial point of view, structural reorganization "should be undertaken in concert with efforts to rectify female underutilization. Flexibility and diversity are two keys to competitive advantage, and both are closely related to the underutilization issue."
So much in the business world has changed since 1995 when this book was first published. However, many American companies and most companies in other countries have yet to take full advantage of -- and reward appropriately -- the talents of women. The companies which do so have a significant competitive advantage, a "secret weapon" if you will. Professional women know at which companies they will be appreciated and rewarded, where there are the greatest opportunities for their personal as well as professional growth. It is no coincidence that these are the same companies which, year after year, are the most profitable in their respective industries. At least until now, many of our nation's companies seem unaware of or indifferent to this "competitive secret."

A Cherished Companion in Times of Change

When I miscarried my first child - half way through the pregnancy - I cried my eyes out for days. No one talked about miscarriages and anyone who did made them into "nothing". Well, it felt like the death of a beloved and threw me into a profound inner process of change.
As a professional woman full of "go get it drive" I did not have models or manuals for what to do when I felt this way. Deeper and deeper I spiraled into myself. Feeling lost and yet exhilarated it made no sense to my logical mind.
A dear friend put this book in my hands and urged me to retreat into the cozy cave of my bed for a couple of hours. As soon as I started reading I found that the journey of Inanna mirrored my own journey. I too shed layers of my old self at the "gates" of descent. I too felt like I was "hanging on a hook and rotting" - at least my old identity certainly felt squeamish, uncomfortable and profoundly challenged.
After I learned to love my journey I found the path back up and out into a new life informed by feminine wisdom and fueled by the fire in my belly from having descended and risen into a new life.
I recommend this book to my consulting and coaching clients who are in the midst of BIG changes on a regular basis so that they too can make sense of their Heroine's Journey. Sylvia masterfully depicts the human condition and potential for transformation. I recommend this book for clinicians, interested spiritual seekers, and all soulful folk.

Phenomenal...A totally unique interpretation of Inanna's descent

If you choose any book on Inanna, or even on the Goddess- and there are many- this is the one to get. Absolutely one of the best books I have ever read on the Goddess Inanna. Truly inspiring. What is truly great about this book is the way the author weaves the of Inanna's descent in a way that makes the relevance to women's lives and psyche's today clear and poetic. the author carefully and skillfully describes how aspects of the goddess Inanna have been relegated to the Shadow "other" and how reclaiming her lessons women can intergrate and reclaim themselves. But this book goes beyond simple Jungian analysis. Perera carefully describes Inanna's descent and interprets it's beauty and wisdom. I have read many books on Inanna and the Sumerian pantheon. This book remains one of my favorites. I can't rave about this book enough. highly recomended for the astrologer wishing to learn more about the roots of Venus, Sumerian buff, Inanna fan, or current explorer of earth based/ goddess based faiths. this book has been the foundation to which I have chosen to explore and learn about Jungian theories. A totally unique interpretation. For any woman on an exploration into herself.

Excellent Reference!

WSINYE (White Space Is Not Your Enemy) is a great reference for those with no design background but who have to produce their own marketing vehicles such as brochures, websites, ads, etc. It is not intended for those with a marketing/design background, as is obvious by the byline of "A Beginner's Guide....". I think some criticism has been leveled at it by designers - but they aren't the ones for whom this book was intended.

What I found useful is that the authors give examples of how design is done wrong and then show how to put it into better order. They take the most common mistakes they see out there, the ones that people with no design background would naturally make, and show how to take the same elements and create a more effective and cohesive piece with greater appeal.

Another great chapter in the book provides layout examples for when time is a constraint. Those simple templates will give great results every time - they don't need to be groundbreaking, the just need to work and help communicate an idea effectively.

Important to good design, principles are given easy to digest segments. Readers don't want to have to take art school just to make an ad. So everything from space to focal point to balance are quickly covered with excellent examples.

Honestly, I was highly impressed with this and feel it would make a great reference when design skills are needed. It is easy to read but also meaty enough to be useful. Highly recommended.

Very enjoyable

White space within a design is a bit like a pause in a conversation - it need not be a bad thing, yet it is just one element in a larger being that is often overlooked or misunderstood.

This book takes a professional look at design, whether for traditional media such as brochures or for more modern media such as the web. The aim is for the beginner (or more experienced person who doesn't mind refreshing their knowledge) to learn about the concepts and practices necessary for producing effective visual communications. It might challenge your perceptions or be viewed as formulaic, fairly obvious stuff. Only you might really know...

Unfortunately this reviewer was put on the back foot straight away when opening the book and noticing the table of contents was presented in that oh-so-trendy-but-overused manner of using solely lower case characters. it is unclear whether this was deliberate as the issue was compounded by using different font styles and weights, making it look very strange in the process (sic). It only needed comic sans and a few smiley faces to add the metaphorical icing to the cake.

Fortunately the sheer wealth of detailed, considered and thought-provoking material on offer drew this reviewer in. This book carefully, or should that be cleverly, works on many levels meaning that the professional who (allegedly) knows it all need not feel talked down to and neither does the relative beginner need to feel that everything is swooshing over their head. It is unfortunate that the title of this book might restrict its possible audience as it is not really something that conveys just how thorough this book is!

From the start you get a great introduction to the principles and development of design before looking at many of the common errors that the author believes so many of us are guilty of. Be wary of stones in the vicinity of greenhouses? After that it is off to art school to briefly learn about elements, principles and theories of design before looking at matters weighty such as layout, type, colour and adding visual oomph. Content has to also play a role, whether it is an infographic, a visual story, a more involved multimedia presentation or a traditional multi-format offering. Each chapter is like a small, bite-sized cocktail snack that you might think of as being too small and insignificant but yet after a plate full of them you will know you've eaten rather a bit too much and consumed rather a lot of varied, different goodies in the process. If you treat it as a thought-enabler, a guide to future developments and a bit of an everything for everyone sort of book you won't be far off the mark.

The price might be a bit of a concern for some at first glance, but if you have any role within visual communications as part of your work you really will find the investment very modest indeed. Even if you walk away with "only" a couple of good ideas or corrections to your present modus operandi then you will have got your money's worth. This is a book that is capable of so much giving if you let it.

In preparation for this new edition of Draping for Fashion Design, we consulted with current users of the text and identified areas where revisions or new information would be helpful. As a result, we have made some changes and added new material throughout the book.

The book now has a new introduction to provide some background about the work of fashion designers and the fashion industry. A brief discussion of the Apparel Company and its divisions is followed by a description of the various customers who buy apparel. We introduce the attributes of seasonal collections, suggest sources of inspiration, and describe the process that leads from the designer's idea to the prototype for production.

Draping, as the course is currently taught in various design schools and universities, includes instruction in sewing when students carry draping projects to completion into finished garments. Since the course curriculum integrates sewing with draping, we have added "sewing tips" for many of the draping projects. Clear and simple sewing instructions are now integrated with draping into one textbook for a comprehensive draping course. We wish to emphasize, however, that no attempt has been made to make this a sewing book. The "sewing tips," which have been interspersed throughout, wherever they might be useful, merely address special sewing problems as they arise in a draping class.

We have added a section that gives instructions for draping "The Bias Slip Dress" in "The Shift" chapter, and we have added a section on "Swimsuits" to the "Sportswear and Casual Wear" chapter. Also, in order to enhance clarity, we have revised diagrams and added new illustrations.

Although computers are used as design and communication tools throughout the industry, we believe that designers still need a basic background of draping in fabric. By draping, the design student acquires the sense of proportion, which can only be developed by seeing the design take shape on the human figure. A feel for texture and the drapability of fabric can only be acquired by actually handling the fabric. Computers are, indeed, used to sketch and draft patterns for new designs, but to do this well requires the ability to correctly visualize the proportions of the finished garment. This skill is developed only by experience with full-size three-dimensional models.

We gratefully acknowledge the support and help that we have received from our colleagues at the Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.). The techniques used in this book have been developed over the course of many years of teaching and experimentation by the Fashion Design faculty at F I.T Refinements in precision were developed as various methods were tested at faculty workshops and in the classroom. Both students and teachers contributed to this process and it is impossible for us to mention everyone who participated over the years. There are, however, some people who were particularly instrumental in the development of the draping curriculum at F I.T Most noteworthy are Professor Emeritus Ernestine Kopp, the first chairperson of the Fashion Design Department, and Professor Emeritus Vittorina Rolfo, who for many years was the assistant chairperson and in that capacity was responsible for the development of new teachers in the department. Her expert guidance in the organization and presentation of the material is remembered gratefully by both of us.

We are also deeply indebted to the many faculty members from numerous colleges and universities who, in response to our inquiry, thoughtfully pointed out areas where Draping for Fashion Design might be made more useful. The information they shared was invaluable. We carefully considered all responses and, wherever possible, followed their suggestions. We especially want to thank Professor Sally I. Helvenston of Michigan State University for pointing out the difficulties encountered when beginners attempted to drape the Peter Pan collar. In response, we included a simpler method combining draping with patternmaking. Professor Sharon Bell of the Academy of Art College, San Francisco, and Professor Anne J. Smock of the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science, as well as several others, suggested a larger format and more illustrations for additional clarity.

This would have been an impossible task without the unstintingly generous help from currently working designers and other industry professionals. They gave us the opportunity to observe firsthand today's methods of fashion design and pattern development. They shared with us the benefits of years of professional experience, gave us access to their sample rooms, and finally, reviewed our material after it was completed.

Many thanks go to Mary Ann Ferro, designer for Woolrich Industries and adjunct assistant professor at F I.T., for sharing with us her method of developing the unstructured drop shoulder jacket. Anthony J. Nuzzo, senior director at Victoria's Secret Stores and adjunct assistant professor at FI.T, worked with us on techniques of draping basic patterns in knitted fabrics and the new section on swimsuits. Great Reference Resource, Not Great for First-Time Learning

I bought this book as a supplement to my draping class and other draping book Helen Joseph-Armstrong's Draping for Apparel Design. FYI this book Jaffe's Draping for Fashion Design and Helen Joseph-Armstrong's book are the two most commonly assigned draping books at university fashion design programs.

PROS:
- Very compact and concise book. This is helpful if you need a reference book that excludes the superfluous "beginner" material and if you need a book to carry around with you. Definitely a lot easier to carry around than the other standard reference Joseph-Armstrong's book. I love how it provides only the essential details.
- Covers a wide variety of draping subjects, including standard and making variations on skirts, shirts, dresses, pants, sleeves, collars, different types of bodices, etc etc. This book extends beyond the introductory draping.

CONS:
- Requires at least a basic background in draping / pattern-making and requires the willingness to perform a lot of trial-and-error. Because it's so concise, you'll find yourself needing to experiment a lot to learn all of the unwritten nuances of draping.
- Minimal amount of figures sometimes make it quite difficult to interpret, making it more necessary to supplement this book with a class or another book.

OVERALL:
A very significant resource to keep around, because of its concise essential instructing and it's size. I highly recommend it for someone who has a strong background in draping and just needs a reference, or for someone who is taking an introductory class simultaneously. For someone who is just learning draping for the first time and not taking a class, I would recommend the larger/bulkier and more detailed Joseph-Armstrong book (price is around the same as this Jaffe book). People have mentioned typos in both this Jaffe book and the Joseph-Armstrong book, but you will learn what's right through a lot of trial-and-error experimentation.

I bought this booked used for 60% off, and would definitely buy this book again at that price, if given the choice. If this book were only offered at full price, I would probably go with the Helen Joseph-Armstrong draping textbook, only for the perceived greater detail in text and figures. This book is amazingly concise though, for those that value compactness over detail.

Great book for the basics

Had to buy this product as a textbook for school (in college for fashion design). It was the first book I had to buy and so the price is always something that could be improved from a student perspective. The book itself goes over the basics of draping, you really touch base on everything in a clear manner. You should have previous sewing knowledge to understand and fully benefit from the content. I did not keep the book after the semester was over and have regretted that. It is a great resource to refer back to. If your in a pinch and need to remember how to drape a set sleeve with a twist you can use this a a basic guide to improve upon. Only thing I would change is the images could be a little clearer, as many people draping are visual learners.

Printed on cheap paper

The information inside the book is great. However, I gave this book 3 stars due to the poor quality of the book. I don't like the fact that I paid $101 and some change for a book printed on low quality paper. In fact, this book has the feel of a flimsy magazine. Within a few weeks of minimal use, the flimsy cover has creases on it and when I turn pages the bottom edges sometimes rip (even when using a gentle hand). Even my draping professor was amazed at the poor quality. I'm not sure if they offer this book in a digital version, but I would recommend getting the digital e-book and saving a few bucks rather than spending $101 for a book that will probably disentigrate within a short time of use.
