There, on top of the mushroom, was a large caterpillar, smoking a pipe. After a while the Caterpillar took the pipe out of its mouth and said to Alice in a slow, sleep voice, 'Who are you?'

What strange things happen when Alice falls down the rabbit-hole and into Wonderland! She has conversations with the Caterpillar and the Cheshire Cat, goes to the Mad Hatter's tea party, plays croquet with the King and Queen of Hearts . . .

Many layers
By Liza
This is a great classic! Children and adults have loved this book as it has many layers and meanings. I love reading it over and over, always getting something new and different each time. I think everyone can enjoy this book; kids and adults. The meaning one retrieves from this classic depends on what path or where one is on their individual journey in life.

A Trip Down The Rabbit Hole All Grown Up
By Michael L. Kauffmann
There is one thing that all potential customers must keep in mind when buying any Alice book: Do not purchase one that does not include the illustrations of John Tenniel! This edition includes all of them and the quality of the reproductions on the pages are excellent. Tenniel's illustrations help add to the childish excitement of Carroll's stories and will be especially invaluable to teenagers and adults, having just by nature of growing up lost some of the imaginative innocence, that ability to stretch reality, that we all possessed as kids.

Of course, the illustrations wouldn't mean jack if they didn't have a captivating story to work with. Carroll's amusing tale of nonsense is targeted as a kid's book, and that is always where many of our fondest memories of it will remain, but as a college student reading it I was amazed by its power to suspend reality and return me to a level of imagination that I had simply thought I lost somewhere along the way. The trip down the rabbit hole can be quite a different experience from a different point of view.

This particular edition also includes a good introduction and very helpful explanatory notes organized chapter by chapter. The introduction and notes offer insights to Carroll's life and his relations with the real life Alice and her family that, from a student viewpoint, reveal an interesting and more personal side of the Alice tales.

Well, hello Dali! I see that you have met Alice.
By Robert J Stek
In 1969 Random House produced a limited run of Alice in Wonderland with 12 wild and colorful heliogravures by surrealist artist Salvador Dali. They issued 2500 standard editions and 500 deluxe editions of the book, charging $375 retail for the standard edition. Copies of the standard edition in good condition now sell for thousands of dollars.

This edition reproduces the original Lewis Carroll text with nice reproductions of the Dali illustrations at a price everyone can afford. The additional material by Carrollian expert Mark Burstein and by a mathematician friend of Dali, Thomas Banchoff, add to the value of owning this edition of Alice no matter how many other versions you may already have.

"A good book! It's a nice overview of wiki editing and administration, with pointers to handy extensions and further online documentation."-Brion Vibber, Chief Technical Officer, Wikimedia Foundation

"This book is filled with practical knowledge based on experience. It's not just spouting some party line."-Rob Church, a developer of MediaWiki

MediaWiki is the world's most popular wiki platform, the software that runs Wikipedia and thousands of other websites. Though it appears simple to use at first glance, MediaWiki has extraordinarily powerful and deep capabilities for managing and organizing knowledge. In corporate environments, MediaWiki can transform the way teams write and collaborate.

This comprehensive book covers MediaWiki's rich (and sometimes subtle) features, helping you become a wiki expert in no time. You'll learn how to:

  • Find your way around by effective searching and browsing
  • Create and edit articles, categories, and user preferences
  • Use advanced features for authors, such as templates, dynamic lists, logical parser functions, and RSS, to organize and maintain large numbers of articles
  • Install and run your own wiki, and configure its look and behavior
  • Develop custom wiki features, called extensions, with the PHP programming language and MySQL database

This book also provides special guidance for creating successful corporate wikis. For beginners who want to create or work on collaborative, community-driven websites with this platform, MediaWiki is the essential one-stop guide.

"I was a MediaWiki newbie before reading this book. Now, many aspects of the platform that were murky before are crystal clear."-JP Vossen, author of O'Reilly's Bash Cookbook

A great way to familiarize yourself with MediaWiki
By calvinnme
This book is for anyone who wants to read wikis, add material to a wiki, or install and run their own MediaWiki site. Each type of user is granted their own section in this book. Part 1 of this book is dedicated to wiki readers, explaining how to navigate a MediaWiki site effectively. Part 2 is for authors, and discusses how to write and edit wiki articles, beginning with the basics and moving to more complex tasks. Part 3 is for administrators and programmers. It covers how to install and maintain a MediaWiki site, how to configure its many settings, and how to program its own features, called MediaWiki extensions. It's a pretty easy and well-organized read in the O'Reilly tradition of technical books. However, if you plan to write extensions, you'll need to know, at minimum, the PHP programming language. This book assumes you already know it. For anything complicated, you'll also need to become familiar with MediaWiki's PHP code - particularly its classes, constants, and global variables - and its database schema. The following is the table of contents, not yet available as part of the product information:

I'm glad I reviewed a copy from the lib before buying
By Voracious Reader
I'm quite technical, and normally I only buy books on complicated subjects that I'll refer to often. Otherwise I just print out the docs on my elderly laser printer. MediaWiki is certainly a complicated subject on a technical level, so I was (am) in the market for a reference book.

Regretably, this book isn't it.

If you are a newcomer who will be *using* a wiki, this could well be a good choice as a *user's* reference book. But if you, as I, will be setting up and managing one, and need to know the many technical details of security, system management, creating local mods, etc. in an easily-digestable form, look elsewhere.

Excellent Guide To MediaWiki for Users, Administrators & Developers
By Ira Laefsky
This O'Reilly Technical Guide provides an excellent introduction and reference to the most popular and successful wiki software for a variety of audiences. Whether you are a newbie who wants to know how Wikipedia works, a site administrator hosting a corporate wiki, the author of an entry who wants to ensure optimal presentation and usability, or the software developer who needs to extend this technology; you will find reference material to meet your needs. Two minor nits, which may be a result of my personal predilections are: I could have used a top-down architectural summary to guide my understanding of the MediaWiki architecture, and would have liked more than a one page reference to Semantic MediaWiki an important extension of this technology. But in being a valuable reference to a wide range of audiences on how to use, administer and extend this technology--the only reference on the internals of this important technology; this book provides an invaluable service.

All you need to know about distribution channels !
By Antonio Vicente La Camera
This book is a rare example on how it is easy to teach the concepts, show practical examples, and summarize everything in 250 pages without relying on unnecessary phrases and words that just repeat the same idea again and again and increase the size of the book to 1000 pages. The author provides detailed explanations on the structure and functioning of distribution channels and depicts a way to effectively build a succesful channel from scratch. He goes beyond the basic concepts to show additional and important information on antitrust laws and international distribution and competition.
I would recommend reading this book and keeping it as one of your reference books to consult whenever you're up to consider changes in the distribution system that arise because of competitive pressures, changes in customer behavior, or new product launches.

About the Author

Neil A. Campbell combined the investigative nature of a research scientist with the soul of an experienced and caring teacher. He earned his M.A. in Zoology from UCLA and his Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of California, Riverside, where he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2001. Dr. Campbell published numerous research articles on how certain desert plants thrive in salty soil and how sensitive plant (Mimosa) and other legumes move their leaves. His 30 years of teaching in diverse environments included general biology courses at Cornell University, Pomona College, and San Bernardino Valley College, where he received the college's first Outstanding Professor Award in 1986. Most recently Dr. Campbell was a visiting scholar in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences at the University of California, Riverside. In addition to his authorship of this book, he coauthored BIOLOGY and Essential Biology with Jane Reece. Each year, over 600,000 students worldwide use Campbell/Reece biology textbooks.

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in Biology from Harvard University, an M.S. in Microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a post-doctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). As an editor at Benjamin Cummings, Dr. Reece played major roles in a number of successful textbooks. In addition to being a coauthor with Neil Campbell on BIOLOGY and Essential Biology, she coauthored The World of the Cell, Third Edition, with W.M. Becker and M.F. Poenie.

Martha R. Taylor has been teaching biology for more than 20 years. She earned her B.A. in Biology from Gettysburg College and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Science Education from Cornell University. She was Assistant Director of the Office of Instructional Support at Cornell for seven years. She has taught introductory biology for both majors and non-majors at Cornell University for many years and is currently a visiting lecturer in Cornell's introductory biology laboratory course. Based on her experiences working with students from high school and community college through university, in both classrooms and tutorials, Dr. Taylor is committed to helping students create their own knowledge of and appreciation for biology. She has been the author of the Student Study Guide for all six editions of BIOLOGY by Drs. Campbell and Reece.

Eric J. Simon is an Assistant Professor of Biology at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to both biology majors and no-biology majors, as well as upper-level biology courses in genetics, microbiology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in Biology and Computer Science and an M.A. in Biology from Wesleyan University, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Harvard University. Currently, he is working toward an M.S.Ed. in Educational Psychology. Dr. Simon's diverse classroom experience includes teaching both biology majors and non-biology majors at numerous institutions, including St. John's University (Minnesota), Minneapolis Community and Technical College–where he earned an Outstanding Teacher Award–and Fordham College at Lincoln Center in New York City. Dr. Simon's research focuses on innovative ways for using technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly among non-biology major students.

WARNING! No access code in rental.
By Anonymous
WARNING!!! Rental does NOT include access code even though the product is titled “Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections Plus MasteringBiology with eText -- Access Card Package (8th Edition).” After you click the 'rent' option, you will see a warning in fine print at the bottom of the rental selection box stating that access codes are not guaranteed. If you miss this tiny warning and proceed with renting, you will most likely receive a used book without a working access code unless you happen to receive a new book for your rental. If you receive a used book for your rental but need the access code, you will need to either keep the rental and buy an access code from Pearson or another source or return the rental and buy a new book with an access code. If you choose to return the rental, your money will be tied up until Rent U receives the returned textbook then refunds your rental fee. Either way, you will need to allow sufficient time to source and obtain your access code. Calling the rental product a textbook with access card package when there is no guarantee that the access card is included is deceptive and needs to be corrected.

It's alive!
By FrKurt Messick
I love this Biology book. I first studied biology nearly twenty-five years ago with a huge and lovely biology book written by an author whose name unfortunately escapes me. I loved that book, and have always judged future biology texts against that one; this one measures up well against my memory of that text.
The fourth edition of `Biology: Concepts & Connections' is an excellent, thorough introduction to the science of biology. It is used at the community college where I tutor (biology and other sciences) for general education and nursing students. The book is divided into seven major sections: The Life of a Cell; Cellular Reproduction and Genetics; Concepts of Evolution; Biological Diversity; Animals; Plants; and finally, general Ecology.
After an interesting introduction, which talks about discovery-based science in addition to theoretical/hypothesis science with interesting examples (the Australian Flying Fox, flies that mimic spiders), the first unit on the Life of the Cell looks at basic structure and chemistry of cells. Even though this text deals with chemistry, a chemistry background is not required. Care is taken from the outset to relate the biology tasks to `everyday life', things that people know and care about - there is a look at athletic performance with slow-twitch and fast-twitch muscles, light in the lives of plants, and even look at the possibility of extraterrestrial life.
The unit on Cellular Reproduction and Genetics introduces a hot topic in general conversation today, including discussions of medicine and law in addition to the basic theory, with some of the latest information included. The units on Concepts of Evolution and Biological Diversity include new features such as discussion on mitochondrial DNA comparison and the use of molecular clocks to date divergence in evolutionary paths. Topics such as increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics are discussed, and the interesting evolutionary situation of Australia, separated from the major landmasses of the rest of the world, shows an interesting side-show on biological diversity.
The unit on Animals will be the most interesting for many, and the diversity here includes discussions from geckos to bears to human traits shared with and different from other animals. Particularly for our nursing students, the sections on respiration (anaerobic and aerobic), broken bones, immune systems, blood-cell diseases and the like really drive home the need for a basic understanding of biology.
The units on Plants and Ecology draw in the larger mass of living things sharing our planet, work to show how the environment operates from the standpoint of individual plants to entire ecosystems. Interesting current topics such as organic farming, population ecology, endangered species and global warming drive home the importance of biology.
The book is very colourful, both in text copy and in pictures. Headers reinforce the broader topics while modules give key concepts within each broad topic. Diagrams are arranged with numbered steps to help understanding, and there are frequent references to website and CD-ROM additions. Key questions are asked at each conceptual point. The `behind the scenes' information helps reinforce the concepts both with the hot topics involved in biological issues today, as well as the personalities driving the science in key areas. Each chapter has a summary of key points, concept questions and multiple-choice questions for test preparation. There are well over 100 `Connection' Modules and `Talking about Science' Modules. Each of the 38 chapters has an interesting, inviting essay as introduction. There are probably 200 CD-ROM and website activities to engage the students, everything from the cloning of genes in bacteria to steroid hormone action to the Honeybee waggle dance.
This is a very good book, with lots of information - it is also a flexible book, and certain portions can be omitted in a syllabus without diminishing the overall text. I find myself constantly glancing through the chapters and reading the interesting essays and connection modules between my tutoring appointments. That's the mark of a good textbook.

New Fifth Edition Brings Everything Up To Date
By John Matlock
This new Fifth Edition of an old standby. The book retains it's aim of engaging students from a wide variety of majors in the wonders of the living world. It relates the basic concepts of biology to concepts in every day life, to evolution, and to the process of science.

The basic upgrades in this edition include:

Greater emphasis on cells as the structural and functional units of life.

Incorporates recent advances in the field of cellular reproduction, genetics and cloning.

the concepts of evolution have been extensively reorganized and updated. This includes a major upgrading in the area of the evolution of biological diversity.

the sections on animals and plants has been redone with a greater emphasis on those forms that the student sees in their everyday life.

the ecology area has been updted with current ecological data and fresh photos.

The text has been extensively reviewed to ensure that the new edition retains the reputation for accuracy that has become a hallmark of this book.

Science and Religion: A Very Short Introduction, by Thomas Dixon

The debate between science and religion is never out of the news: emotions run high, fuelled by polemical bestsellers like The God Delusion and, at the other end of the spectrum, high-profile campaigns to teach "Intelligent Design" in schools. Yet there is much more to the debate than the clash of these extremes. As Thomas Dixon shows in this balanced and thought-provoking introduction, a whole range of views, subtle arguments, and fascinating perspectives can be found on this complex and centuries-old subject. He explores the key philosophical questions that underlie the debate, but also highlights the social, political, and ethical contexts that have made the tensions between science and religion such a fraught and interesting topic in the modern world. Dixon emphasizes how the modern conflict between evolution and creationism is quintessentially an American phenomenon, arising from the culture and history of the United States, as exemplified through the ongoing debates about how to interpret the First-Amendment's separation of church and state. Along the way, he examines landmark historical episodes such as the Galileo affair, Charles Darwin's own religious and scientific odyssey, the Scopes "Monkey Trial" in Tennessee in 1925, and the Dover Area School Board case of 2005, and includes perspectives from non-Christian religions and examples from across the physical, biological, and social sciences.

Science and Religion: Questions for Consideration and Discussion

  • If you think that scientific and religious forms of knowledge are fundamentally different, can you define the essence of that difference?
  • Why has Richard Dawkins's brand of scientific atheism proved so compelling to millions of people in the twenty-first century?
  • Can miracles happen? And how can science help us answer that question?
  • If you think that it is possible to combine science with religious faith then what do you think is most difficult about that combination? Are there any scientific findings that could or should give a religious believer pause for thought?
  • Is "Intelligent Design" a scientific theory? If not, why not?

Rumors of a war between science and religion are much exaggerated
    By Kerry Walters
Thomas Dixon's Science and Religion is, I believe, one of the very best volumes written thus far in the Oxford Short Introduction series. In it, Dixon moves beyond the Enlightenment-generated simplistic model that sees science and religion as opposing poles (a position that, ironically, is embraced by many of today's religious fundamentalists) to offer a much more nuanced analysis of the relationship between the two.

Dixon argues that casual observations about the war between religion and science ought to take several points under consideration. First, it's not at all clear that it makes sense to talk of either science or religion simpliciter. Both are extremely complex terms that accommodate a large number of interpretations. Second, it's not at all clear what the boundaries of either science or religion are. Neither falsification nor testability are, by themselves, sufficient criteria to designate science from pseudoscience, and defining religion is even more problematic. Finally, what frequently gets interpreted as a clash between religion and science is frequently a deeper social or political clash that's opportunistically fought on the science/religion battlefield. It is true that science/religion conflicts, when they can be identified, are disagreements about epistemic authority. But even that is complicated.

To flesh out these claims, Dixon examines the Galileo incident (chapter 2), the reaction of Victorian England to Darwinism (chapter 4), and the current U.S. phenomenon of Intelligent Design (chapter 5), demonstrating how each is much more involved than merely a battle between theists and scientists. He also examines the complicated issue of natural law and miracles (his analysis of the "God of the gaps" move in chapter 3 is especially instructive) and debates about whether morality can rest on a naturalistic foundation (chapter 6). Dixon offers very good documentation for his references (something that isn't always done by Short Introduction authors), and he concludes the volume with an excellent bibliography.

An excellent book that will surely whet reader's appetites (as it has mine) to take a more sophisticated look at the quasi-mythical war between science and religion.

Serves Very Well as a Very Short Introduction
    By Camber
While not perfect, this book serves as an excellent introduction to this subject. Dixon proves to be well informed of the issues and manages to cover quite a lot of ground, and he's also sufficiently fair and balanced in presenting the competing arguments.

Perhaps the broadest lesson one can glean from the book is that science and religion have always had a messy multidimensional relationship, with many areas of potential agreement and disagreement. Part of the reason is that both science and religion are unavoidably framed in sociocultural and historical contexts, dialectically both affecting those contexts and being affected by them. Moreover, science and religion both have fuzzy boundaries, and both face many similar epistemic difficulties with respect to justifying their beliefs (despite the common but mistaken notion that science is purely objective whereas religion rests purely on faith and subjectivity).

The book lays all of this out with the help of many examples, and thereby gives a sense of how complicated matters are, but doesn't provide any final answers. This gives the impression that some disagreement and tension will probably always exist between science and religion, despite whatever progress might be made in finding reconciliations. However, if one wishes to be optimistic, there is still the prospect of finding (creating?) more and more common ground between the two, possibly resulting in worldviews which increasingly draw on the strengths of both, and of course there's already much precedent for this.

I say the book isn't perfect mainly because "religion" is mostly taken to mean Western monotheisms, especially Christianity, as Dixon acknowledges up front; I would have preferred to see Eastern views included as well, and I think that would have considerably reshaped the book. I also would have preferred a deeper treatment of the philosophical issues Dixon touches on, in exchange for a bit less time spent on detailing historical cases.

But these "imperfections" are largely matters of (my) preference, and again the bottom line is that Dixon has done an excellent job of presenting this subject at an introductory level. I highly recommend the book, and those who enjoy it may want to move on to the extensive The Oxford Handbook of Religion and Science (Oxford Handbooks in Religion and Theology) edited by Philip Clayton.
