Easy to read and faithful to the Catholic Church
By A Customer
I was given this Bible as a Christmas gift, and my initial reaction to a Bible written in contemporary English was one of skepticism. I thought that this would surely be a watered-down version of Sacred Scriptures that compromises the true meaning of God's Word for the sake of making it easy to read. After spending some time with this Bible, I am pleased to say that I was wrong. It is written in easy to read contemporary English, but still manages to convey the truth of God's Word in a way that is consistent with Catholic faith and morals. One thing I didn't like is that the deuterocanonical books were placed in a separate section at the end rather than in their traditional order among the other books. Still, I think this Bible is worth buying for anyone who wants a very readable version of Sacred Scripture that is faithful to the Catholic Church.

Great Bible for young adults
By A Customer
This bible has a great layout. Each book is preceeded by an application to real life which helps the reader understand the book he/she is about to read. At the front of the Bible there are questions that people frequently ask and Scripture sites that contain the answers to those questions. It's just great!

Readable, but a Paraphrase
By Elderbear
A hip packaging of the "Living Bible," a paraphrase of the good old KJV. As such, it not only shares the KJV's textual shortcomings, but exchanged the ambiguity for readability. Not a good study Bible, but one I managed to cruise through, cover to cover, begats & all, when I was 15. It's a trip everybody in Western culture should take at least once. This version makes it far less daunting than it used to be.
5 stars for readability. 2 stars for the quality of the text. Several more modern translations, such as the NIV, make much better compromises....

Disrupt Aging: A Bold New Path to Living Your Best Life at Every Age, by Jo Ann Jenkins

“Jo Ann Jenkins’s Disrupt Aging is spot-on: every single year is a gift. By confronting the most common stereotypes about aging, this book will help us all live each year to the fullest.” —Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and founder of LeanIn.Org

We’ve all seen the ads on TV and in magazines—“50 is the new 30!” or “60 is the new 40!” A nice sentiment to be sure, but CEO of AARP Jo Ann Jenkins disagrees. 50 is 50, and she, for one, likes the look of it.

In Disrupt Aging, Jenkins focuses on three core areas—health, wealth, and self—to show us how to embrace opportunities and change the way we look at getting older. Here, she chronicles her own journey and that of others who are making their mark as disruptors to show readers how we can be active, healthy, and happy as we get older. Through this powerful and engaging narrative, she touches on all the important issues facing people 50+ today, from caregiving and mindful living to building age-friendly communities and making our money last.

This is a book for all the makers and doers who have a desire to continue exploring possibilities, to celebrate discovery over decline, and to seek out opportunities to live the best life there is.

Please Save Your Money.
By M. Gilbert
There is absolutely nothing new (or even mildly interesting) in this book. Jenkins book is full of tired cliches, old anecdotes and worn out quotes. If it weren't for her AARP connection, I doubt this book would have ever been published. Statements from the book such as, "Let's face it: it's expensive to be alive" and "We're busy people living busy lives" and "We are a nation that loves its automobiles" made me wonder if the famous people who recommended it, and described it as "brilliant" and "compelling," had actually read it. This book was a complete waste of my time and money.

Unrealistic and Inappropriate Happy H___S___. Disappointed and Want My Money Back
By Amurrand
Ms. Jenkins has an important point to make regarding not thinking of age as a number but a state of mind and directed energy. She talks glowingly of new types of developments for happy seniors and intergenerational developments. I simply could not make my way past that part. She totally ignores the vast numbers of people over 50 who have no resources, who can't find decent housing, who can't redirect their ives due to illness, disability, or other misfortunes - and to be fair, some of their own making. But I am a Realtor who tries to find people in Charlotte have waited 5-7 years for a section 8 voucher so they can find a place to live, who find that there simply aren't any, and if they don't find one in a short time period, they lose the voucher, AND they can't reapply because Charlotte is not taking any applications anymore. There are waiting list of YEARS, but where people are supposed to live while they are on the waiting list isa fine questions. So talking endlessly about all the wonderful possibilities, and particularly as the CEO of AARP, I would find it more worthwhile she tried to write about the "talk" of section 8 and other help that is supposedly passed out to people willy nilly that has no reality behind it.

To be fair, I flunked retirement after three years and decided to go back to work because I love to work and I wanted to find meaning in things that I did to help people, so I focus on mature adults and seniors to help them find "the right place to live" as if they all had the ability and financial wherewithal to actually choose - which they don't most times. So, I am an example of her Disrupt Aging and do what you want, learn, earn, live, etc., but he happy puppy examples of her friend - the doctors, and business owners, and lawyers who get together and chat about their wonderful lives. Look around ladies. The view is only good if you look sideways or up. Not so pretty when you down, and it sounds like you simply don't.

it seems like maybe a PR firm wrote the book
By EDWARD A SAMUELSON
it seems like maybe a PR firm wrote the book. it seemed like a brochure. the examples of very rich people re-inventing themselves was beside the point: what about average people. it seems to me that AARP needs to be disrupted, since the acronym is useless any more; CHANGE AARP to something meaningful. The only part of the book that seems relevant was the last action chapter. reinvent AARP, and start a conversation on how the most powerful nation on earth which it is documented, HATES ITS OLDER PEOPLE, and make changes so an average person can retire in DIGNITY, then that would be great. We need a huge cultural change, and you could be the person who makes that happen.

ps: none of my friends has a clue what AARP does, and we all should. it is such an important organization.

European Cities and Towns: 400-2000, by Peter Clark

Since the Middle Ages Europe has been one of the most urbanized continents on the planet and Europe's cities have firmly stamped their imprint on the continent's economic, social, political, and cultural life.

This study of European cities and towns from the fall of the Roman Empire to the present day looks both at regional trends from across Europe and also at the widely differing fortunes of individual communities on the roller coaster of European urbanization. Taking a wide-angled view of the continent that embraces northern and eastern Europe as well as the city systems of the Mediterranean and western Europe, it addresses important debates ranging from the nature of urban survival in the post-Roman era to the position of the European city in a globalizing world.

The book is divided into three parts, dealing with the middle ages, the early modern period, and the nineteenth and twentieth centuries - with each part containing chapters on urban trends, the urban economy, social developments, cultural life and landscape, and governance. Throughout, the book addresses key questions such as the role of migration, including that of women and ethnic minorities; the functioning of competition and emulation between cities, as well as issues of inter-urban cooperation; the different ways civic leaders have sought to promote urban identity and visibility; the significance of urban autonomy in enabling cities to protect their interests against the state; and not least why European cities and towns over the period have been such pressure cookers for new ideas and creativity, whether economic, political, or cultural.

Lots of Facts, Little Analysis
By Charles D. Fox V
Clark provides a good overview of the the development of European urban areas across the continent and a broad timescale. While this breadth is one of the book's advantages, it is also one of its primary weaknesses, in that it simply cannot provide a sufficient level of detail on any given how much material it has to cover. However, its argument that the city should be the primary unit of analysis in European history given the constant realignment of borders and the general weakness of central governments is well taken.

Waltz with Bashir: A Lebanon War Story, by Ari Folman, David Polonsky

“Special, strange, and peculiarly potent... Extraordinary.” —Variety

One night in Beirut in September 1982, while Israeli soldiers secured the area, Christian militia members entered the refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila and began to massacre hundreds, if not thousands, of Palestinians. Ari Folman was one of those Israeli soldiers, but for more than twenty years he remembered nothing of that night or of the weeks leading up to it. Then came a friend’s disturbing dream, and with it Folman’s need to excavate the truth of the war in Lebanon and answer the crucial question: what was he doing during the hours of slaughter?

Challenging the collective amnesia of friends and fellow soldiers, Folman painfully, candidly pieces together the war and his place in it. Gradually, the blankness of his mind is filled in by scenes of combat and patrol, misery and carnage, as well as dreams and hallucinations. Soldiers are haunted by inexplicable nightmares and flashbacks—snapping, growling dogs with teeth bared and eyes glowing orange; a recurring image of three young men rising naked out of the sea to drift into the Beirut battlefield. Tanks crush cars and buildings with lethal indifference; snipers pick off men on donkeys, men in cars, men drinking coffee; a soldier waltzes through a storm of bullets; rock songs fill the air, and then yellow flares. The recollections accumulate until Ari Folman arrives at Sabra and Shatila and his investigation reaches its terrible end.

Waltz With Bashir is a gripping reconstruction of a soldier's experience during Israel's war in Lebanon told in graphic novel form. The result is a probing inquiry into the unreliable quality of memory, and a powerful denunciation of the senselessness of all wars. Profoundly original in form and approach, Waltz with Bashir will take its place as one of the great works of wartime testimony.

Questions for Ari Folman and David Polonksy

Q: How did the book Waltz with Bashir come about?

Ari Folman: The project began as a movie, of course, but the film was more influenced by graphic novels than anything else I've seen. I'm a big fan of graphic novels, and books in general were on my mind throughout the whole process, especially Catch 22, Slaughterhouse Five, and The Adventures of Wesley Jackson--novels by writers who'd experienced war and then taken a step back to look at it in an ironic, funny way. So the book version always seemed obvious to me and we worked on both simultaneously.

Q: Why illustration? Why tell this story with comics and animation?

Ari Folman: It gave us total freedom to do whatever we liked. We could go from one dimension to another, from real events to the subconscious to dreams to hallucinations. It gave us the liberty to play with vastly different elements in one fluid story line, with no boundaries, and also to make something visually familiar and tired--war scenes--look entirely new.

Q: In terms of the drawings, what was the biggest challenge?

David Polonsky: The illustrations had to have a sense of truthfulness. I couldn't pretend I was showing things exactly as they were, although there had to be the ring of authenticity. But I had no references for a lot of the scenes--like the one where Ari is in the Beirut air terminal, for example. Besides the fact that as an Israeli I can't go to Beirut, the building itself was demolished and rebuilt. So I had no idea what the inside looked like. But there were some references to work with: the scene took place in the 1980's and the building was from the 1930's, and there was Ari and the impression that all this European modernist splendor would have made on him as a young soldier. We collected old posters for Lebanese airline companies, and those details made their way into the panels.

Q: The story is Ari's, and very personal, but it's drawn by David. How did you work together?

Ari Folman: We went through a lengthy process with many conversations about what we were creating. At first, David found it difficult to take something so intimate, something that came from me, and draw it. I think it's pretty rare that an illustrator inhabits someone else's history for three years of his life. It was hard for me, too, because I can't draw, and that limitation meant I really had to put myself in someone else's hands.

David Polonksy: For me, the difficulty was creating the young Ari of the 1980's, someone I didn't know. There were very few photographs of that period. I had to come up with someone who combined rebelliousness with conformity and a certain innocence...Ari didn't accept the rules of his surrounding framework--and he's still like that--but he nevertheless became an army officer. So I gave him a nonstandard haircut and left him unshaven, which is pretty unusual in the army.

Ari Folman: My mother says he didn't make me handsome enough. And in the present-day drawings, David had to change my hair color all the time--it kept getting grayer. Seriously, David's gigantic achievement is to have captured my character at nineteen years old. I felt no connection to that person and only became reacquainted with my younger self through David's portrayal.

Q: You've insisted that Waltz with Bashir is not a political project, but there's no way to read the book or see the movie and avoid making a connection to politics.

Ari Folman: The point is that I didn't set out to make a movie or a book with a political message. It's above all a personal story. But certain things were very important to me that you might call "political." We went to great lengths to avoid conveying anything about war that might be heroic.

David Polonsky: There was another crucial thing for us, which was to avoid showing the soldiers as victims. There's a phrase in Israel about shooting and crying--we shoot and then cry at our misfortune at having to do it. We didn't want any of that here, no self-pity. There's a clear, simple message: war is terrible.

Ari Folman: Listen, Waltz breaks no news in terms of what happened at Sabra and Shatila. Everyone knows the reported facts and I had nothing new to say. I was interested in the ordinary soldier, his point of view, and in the chronology of his understanding of the massacre.

Q: The book and the movie have come out in the United States at a time when the conflict seems more intractable than ever.

Ari Folman: I'm not that pessimistic. Everyone knows that one day there will be a Palestine. In Israel, most people want to be part of the mainstream of ordinary life. They want to earn a good salary, pay less taxes, take a vacation abroad once a year. They don't want to live by the sword. Look at it this way: I made the movie of Waltz with German co-producers. Sixty years ago, my parents' families were slaughtered by Germans. My parents were the only survivors. What's sixty years from the perspective of history? Nothing, but the change is profound. I've been to the Sarajevo film festival: think what was happening there thirteen years ago and now they live in peace. So it can be done.

From Publishers Weekly
While it must have been no easy task for Israeli filmmaker Folman and chief illustrator Polonsky to turn their groundbreaking, Golden Globe–winning 2008 animated documentary into a graphic novel, the transition from film to page is flawless. Folman's story is the account of how he came to grips with the repressed memories of the time he was a soldier in the 1982 invasion of Lebanon. As much a study of the fungible nature of memory as a dissection of the ease with which war zones can dehumanize ordinary soldiers, Waltz with Bashir uses the same journalistic technique for self-examination as David Carr did with Night of the Gun. Folman goes from one fellow veteran to the next, trying to get somebody to tell him what he can't remember. Bit by bit the holes are filled in—though never completely; the narrative is never cheapened by turning it into a simple mystery to be solved—as Folman sidles closer to the war's central horror: the massacre of Palestinians by Christian militias at two refugee camps. Utilizing frames that seem cut straight from the film, the book threads together Polonsky's darkly gleaming nightmare drawings into a seamless whole. (Feb.)

Grade 10 Up—Adapted from the Oscar-nominated animated film of the same name, this is a stunning investigation into one soldier's real-life experience during Israel's 1982 war in Lebanon. In 2006, Folman met up with a friend from his military service days, who told him of the recurring nightmares he had based on their experiences. Folman admitted to not remembering anything from the conflict and started a quest to find out what really happened to him during those traumatic days. He traveled across Europe interviewing former comrades, a reporter who covered the war, and his own psychologist to piece together at least some of the events that he lived through. As the story develops, both Folman and readers relive the terrors of the Sabra and Shatila Massacre, a tragedy that ended in the slaughter of more than 800 unarmed civilians by the Lebanese Christian Militia while Israeli forces let it happen. While Folman tackles many of the same wartime themes of violence and tragedy as Joe Sacco's Palestine (Fantagraphics, 2001), the additional explorations of memory and dream make the experience more personal. Polonsky's art reuses still images from the film. His clever eye for detail and creative sense for layout make the images explode on the page. Thought-provoking and emotionally powerful, this is a fabulous story for mature readers interested in wartime narratives told in a fresh, innovative style.—Matthew L. Review of "Waltz with Bashir"
By Edward H. Thomas
This is a moving story related in the graphic format that is best known in comic books but has recently come into increasing use for serious novels and novelettes. The subject is an important one, based on real events in Lebanon in 1982. The principal protagonist and many of the other charactrs are Israelis who were performing their required military service at a time when Israel invaded Lebanon. Sent into Lebanon with little or no understanding of why, they soon found themselves ordered to shoot blindly in various directions, which at first they did with careless abandon. Gradually, however, they became aware that they were killing unarmed women, children and others. Many of these young Israelis suffered afterward from serious psychological problems. For the lead character, the result was complete loss of memory of what he was doing during that period, and the story is developed around his efforts, many years later, to recover that memory by talking with others who were in Lebanon at that time. That is the unfolding story of this graphic book, and it is not appropriate for me to disclose more of it here, or to say who Bashir is except that Bashir is not the protagonist's name.

This work is powerful. For those not familiar with the events in Lebanon at that time, it is an intense way to gain some understanding of them, perhaps leading to more traditional book reading to get a broader historical picture. For those who do know the history quite well already, it is a vivid reminder of what is behind more recent happenings involving Israel and Lebanon. The story makes no mention of the U.S. role at the time, which was quite significant.

"Waltz With Bashir": Timeless and Exquisite
By Luther R. Norman
I found the book "Waltz With Bashir", since the film version is adapted from the graphic novel, to be one of the best true statements about war. With countless devastating, illegal and unnecessary conflicts spread about the world there is none (by soldiers from different observation positions) better than an eye-witness account. In near mint condition the book references the film virtually scene by scene.
