About the Author

Robert L. Gould (Ph.D., University of California–San Diego) is a leader in the statistics education community. He has served as chair of the American Statistical Association’s Committee on Teacher Enhancement, has served as chair of the ASA’s Statistics Education Section, and was a co-author of the Guidelines for Assessment in Instruction on Statistics Education (GAISE) College Report. As the associate director of professional development for CAUSE (Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education), he has worked closely with the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) to provide traveling workshops and summer institutes in statistics. He also presented an AMATYC summer institute in 2009. For over ten years, he has served as Vice-Chair of Undergraduate Studies at the UCLA Department of Statistics, and he is Director of the UCLA Center for the Teaching of Statistics. In 2012, Rob was elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association.

Colleen N. Ryan has taught statistics, chemistry, and physics to diverse community college students for decades. She taught at Oxnard College from 1975 to 2006, where she earned the Teacher of the Year Award. Colleen currently teaches statistics part time at California Lutheran University. She often designs her own lab activities. Her passion is to discover new ways to make statistical theory practical, easy to understand, and sometimes even fun. Colleen earned a B.A. in physics from Wellesley College, an M.A.T. in physics from Harvard University, and an M.A. in chemistry from Wellesley College. Her first exposure to statistics was with Frederick Mosteller at Harvard. In her spare time, she sings with the Oaks Chamber Singers, has been an avid skier in the past, and enjoys time with her family.

Rebecca K. Wong has taught mathematics and statistics at West Valley College for more than twenty years. She enjoys designing activities to help students actively explore statistical concepts and encouraging students to apply those concepts to areas of personal interest. Rebecca earned a B.A. in mathematics and psychology from the University of California—Santa Barbara, an M.S.T. in mathematics from Santa Clara University, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from San Francisco State University. She has been recognized for outstanding teaching by the National Institute of Staff and Organizational Development and the California Mathematics Council of Community Colleges. When not teaching, Rebecca is an avid reader and enjoys hiking trails with friends.

I was required to buy this book with access code for a stats class. There were two missing pages that were pretty essential to the book. Also, they said that all the online information was compatible with Windows 10. It was not.

About the Author

Dan Pilone is a Senior Software Architect with Blueprint Technologies, Inc. He has designed and implemented systems for Hughes, ARINC, UPS, and the Naval Research Laboratory. He also teaches project management, software design, and software engineering at The Catholic University in Washington D.C. Dan has written several books on software development, including UML 2.0 in a Nutshell (0-596-00795-7) and UML 2.0 Pocket Reference (0-596-10208-9), both O'Reilly.

Russell Miles is a senior consultant for SpringSource in the UK where he works with various companies to help them take full advantage of the Spring Framework. To ensure that he has as little spare time as possible, Russ contributes to various open source projects while working on books for O'Reilly.

The Head First series scores again

I've read and reviewed several of the "Head First" series of books on programming languages and software design, so I thought I would give this one a try too. Unlike so many books on software development, this one doesn't start with a terse and rather useless overview chapter. Instead it clearly tells you who this book is for: Those who have a background in programming, specifically Java, who want to learn techniques for building and delivering software. First the book explains the Head First concept in learning - using puzzles, cartoons, graphics, and anything else that should stick in your head to explain the usually dry topic of software engineering.

The first three chapters - "Great Software Development", "Gathering Requirements", and "Project Planning" - talk about how software development usually goes wrong and talks about some of the methods for organizing your efforts. Chapter 4 puts some of these ideas in motion when the book analyzes the development of a mythical application, iSwoon. The book has the application get into serious trouble and then shows you the way out of the abyss using good software design methodology. Next, the book has you adding features to "BeatBox Pro", which is an application from the "Head First Java" book. This is where your ability to understand Java code comes into play. The book also discusses the use and usefulness of the Ant build tool for Java projects. However, this is a book on how to approach the design of the software, not how to perform the detailed coding, so having somewhat rusty Java skills should be acceptable. Throughout the book are puzzles, Q&A sessions, and "There are no dumb question" sessions that really drive home the points being made. The following is the table of contents for the book:

Because they could have added a couple chapters to 30 Days and done it all in one book. The second book was a poor sequel to 30 Days, which was wonderful. I was disappointed in Committed because it lacked the page turning suspense of its predecessor.

I was expecting more. The divorce was boring. Could have been exciting. When I found out I needed to buy the sequel I thought OK I can do that. But is was not worth the $4.99.

These two introductory texts are similar both in format they are short, visually appealing, and have a small trim size and in arrangement, with chapters including "Origins and Historical Development," "Sacred Persons," "Ethical Principles," "Sacred Time," "Death and After Life," and "Society and Religion." Chapters conclude with a one-page excerpt and commentary from a sacred or historical book. Littleton (Eastern Wisdom) and Gordon (The Breaking of a Thousand Swords) provide clear and informative explanations about Shinto and Islam, respectively, as they develop and balance themes of religion, history, society, and modernity within their discussions. In discussing Shinto, a significant religion in Japan, Littleton focuses on deities and spirits, shrines, and the ways Buddhism and Christianity have influenced Shintoism. He frequently cites Ryusaku Tsunoda's Sources of Japanese Traditions (1958), along with more recent sources. The several themes Gordon develops in his introduction to Islam include Hadith, or stories regarding the life, teachings, and actions of Muhammad; and Sharia, or ways divine will is portrayed in Islamic sacred law, Hadith, and the Quran. Libraries may already be well stocked with introductions to Islam by such authors as Karen Armstrong and John Esposito, but these useful works are unique in providing an introduction to their respective religions without trying to explain too much. Buddhism and Shinto share sacred places and sacred persons in Japan, but whereas Buddhism emphasizes the nonworldly, Shinto, as Littleton portrays it, is a religion of the world. Lacking a clear vision of the afterlife, Shinto makes veneration of the innumerable kami, or deities, the center of the faith. Littleton glosses over sacred texts, ethics, festivals, and rituals as well. Although this slim, handsome title is a brief, boilerplate overview, its attractive illustrations and solid introductory information make it worth considering for collections lacking introductions to these subjects. Shinto - The Way of the Gods, condenced for your convenience

C. Scott Littleton's "Shinto: Origins, Ritual, Festivals, Spirits and Sacred Places" is a surprisingly good guide to Japan's native religion, considering its small size and ease of reading. This thin book takes a respectful look at Shinto's origin, main tenants, major characters, sacred texts and theology. The information is quite scholarly, as befits an Oxford Press publication.
It is a very brief overview, and should be considered as an introductory book for anyone who wants to quickly understand Shinto without dedicating considerable time. Only the very main aspects are introduced, and many controversial elements, such as the inclusion of Tenri-kyo amongst the Shinto sects, are never touched on. Other things such as the nature of kami and their role in Japanese society over time, are not developed well, and could lead to some misunderstandings regarding the kami. However, this is to be expected in such a small book.
There are several lovely pictures, but all in all this book is more text than photo-guide, as it should be. It is impressive to see Shinto so well-condensed, allowing for a general understanding of the religion in such a short time.

I'd pass on this one

If you're a western tourist, who's never read anything about Shinto, you might be able to get something out of this book. Anyone with a little knowledge of the spiritual practice should probably pass on this one. It's too condensed to really discuss the topic in anything more than a superficial way. It has some pretty pictures, but they do little to illustrate anything being discussed.

I also felt it suffered from being written by someone who was clearly from the West and seemed to be struggling to interpret it too much through the viewpoint of our own value systems and philosophy, rather than on it's own terms. If he'd used the terms "ambiguity tolerance" or "contradictory" as a shorthand way of describing Shinto one more time, I think I'd have chucked the book in the waste bin.

good intro to the basics

This tiny book (100 pages in length and of small dimensions) explores the basics of the origins, rituals, festivals, spirits, sacred places, conception of sacred time, sacred texts and the afterlife as pertains to Shinto.

Also interesting is the author's discussion of how Shinto fits into the greater framework of Japanese society and how it is often practiced right alongside Buddhism with no feeling of contradiction. He says many Japanese often have Shinto weddings but Buddhist funerals.

The book has some beautiful photographs as well as some plates of works of art. This is the simplest of introductions, nothing in depth, no deep theology. I was suprised how much of it I already knew (and I've never read anything on Shinto.) I guess I just picked it up from talking to people and from literature. It did provide a lot of info I didn't know though and its piqued my interest enough to want to read more about Japan's indigenous religion.

I would love to say....

I would love to say that this was a fascinating warning against our ever growing dependence on technology and how it has changed us to were we are more connected to the inanimate than the animate. I would love to say that this book was an extraordinary work of provocative literary fiction and how it made me think and challenged my views on sexuality and the world around me.... But I can't. Because this book was an amazing, hard to put down, unbelieveably graphic, in depth, fantasized look at people with car-crash-fetishes.

James Ballard a director (I think) of commercials gets into a serious car accident that kills the driver of the other vehicle involved and forever changes James and the victim's wife. Through the strange and sometimes dangerous eyes of a deranged man, Dr. Robert Vaughn, who also had long ago been in a life altering crash, they discover the sexuality of the pairing of their bodies with automobiles and the eroticism of car crashes. (I'm pretty sure others who are die-hard fans of this book will scoff at my paultry description of the book, but that's basically what this book is about.)

I enjoyed the book because it was different-- definitely an alternative in eroticism-- and gave me a glimpse of how people react differently to tragedies or the unthinkable. I can't say I walked away from the book with a more enlightened view of anything, but I can say I walked away with satisfaction.

The only complaint I have is the tone of the book: It was monotone. There were so many instances in the book were I knew I needed to feel something-- astonishment, horror, grief, lust-- but they were lost in the one page long, overly detailed, paragraphs. I have read 100 Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera so I am familiar with this type of style but I think for this book empahsis-- ie. shorter paragraphs-- were needed to punctuate the scenes. And his switches in scenes and times of day and character actions completely threw me off because they were not actually stated. It was more of an aftethought. The author's main focus was telling the story and making sure the reader understood that there was semen *everywhere* and vulvas being penetrated constantly. Sounds a bit much for a review, right? Read the book and you'll see that what I said was practically G-Rated.

Points for subject matter if not for execution

This is a case of a derivative work being superior to the original, IMO. I came to the novel because I found the film so compelling. True, the two share a fascinating take on the relation of man and technology in their exploration of the eroticism of one of the more iconic pieces of machinery ever created: the automobile. But this isn't just doing-it-in-the-back-seat-of-the-Chevy sex, this is kinky, body-modification-by-violent-means sex.
Ballard's characters are obsessed with car crashes and the way in which the human body and mind are forever altered by the experience. There is an obsession with scarring, with wounds, with broken bones and torn flesh, with body fluids and the way violent impact can force them from us. This is ground-breaking stuff, thought-provoking and troubling in ways that aren't pleasant to think about. Unfortunately, whether it's that Ballard's style isn't conducive to conveying the eroticism in any visceral way or whether the sheer length of this story works against it, the novel never really grabbed hold of my imagination.
I had a sense, as I slogged through the latter half of the book, that I was reading a short story in novel's clothing. It feels padded to me, and highly repetitive. The erotic frisson of engine coolant as a kind of sexual musk lost its charm after the first dozen times it was evoked. Ballard's sexual vocabulary here is clinical in the extreme which may work in terms of distancing the reader from sex on wholly human terms, but it works too well. Held at a distance by the words he chooses, it's hard to get a feel for the implied eroticism of the subject matter. It's all too cerebral, too cold and mechanical. The machine is all, and humans might as well be made of metal, too.
I give points for the chances he took, but subtract them for the unnecessarily sterile way in which he took them.

Thought-provoking, good

Crash is an incredibly strange book. You've probably guessed that already, since it's about people with an erotic fascination for car crashes. The book isn't nearly as disturbing as some people would have you believe - sure, it's controversial, graphic, and a very strange, but it's not as disturbing as you might think.
Ballard's writing style takes time to get used to. Crash probably has, if you put all of it together, about four pages of dialogue, tops. There is very little talking among the characters; most of the story is in the vivid descriptions and elaborate detail. The story has an incredibly amount of detail when it comes to describing the crashes and the sexual fascination that revolves around them.
Which brings me to my next point - what makes this book good isn't necessarily it's plot or characters, as the plot is not incredibly cohesive and the characters are not in any way dynamic (even the twisted "TV scientist" Vaughan can be surprisingly normal at times). What makes this a really slick and cool book is the subject matter, detail and ideas implied. "The keys to a new sexuality born from a perverse technology" is an apt description of the books theme. However, summaries of the book often talk of the character's staging of accidents. This is a red herring; after the characters get into a crash and develop this fascination, most likely they don't crash their cars again. There is much description of the implied sexual elements of vehicle collision and after-effects of it - much detail is paid to the wounds crash victims suffer, probably more than anything else. However, from the first line it is apparent that a principle character died trying to stage a crash.
Crash is a book that after you've read it, you won't forget it. The subject matter is brilliantly thought-provoking and thoroughly strange. The only reason I give it four stars is the lack of plot it has sometimes makes the book difficult to read and understand. It's really more of a four and 1/2. To close: read Crash. Whether you like it or not, you most likely won't regret reading it.

I have read many self development books yet it was this book that made me finally understand how simple it really is. There are distinct Laws of the Universe that when acknowledged and applied correctly will bring you everything that is yours by Divine Right.

As a society in general, we have been led to believe that life is much more difficult than it really is. Success in all areas of your Life is not hard to attain at all-- that is of course, if you know the game and how to play it!

Read this book and change the way you look at yourself and more importantly how you look at every situation. Remember - it's not the situation- it's how you look at the situation that shapes your destiny.

I can not stress enough the positive impact that you will see happen in your life and the people's lives around you when you read this book and apply the principles and affirmations. Wise and Way Ahead of Her Time...

Though not a large book, this is a very worthwhile read and easily digested in bites. So if you only have small bits of time to sit and read, you won't get lost with this one.

In rebuttal of previous negative reviews, part of my background and education is a degree in Theology, and further studies into world religions and ancient texts. As someone who understands extensive biblical study - and I mean cross referencing original greek, aramaic and hebrew texts, as well as many, many authors and researchers works, writing theses and all the other such efforts required in such education and credentials, I still find this book compelling.

It was not the easiest read for me initially as Florence speaks in terms of things that I had never, at the time, really heard much of before. It was a new kind of thinking for me. The only reason why I was reading the book was because an 80+ year old lady recommended it to me and asked me to.

I found myself challenged in thought/perception, moral philosophy and interpretation by a book written in 1925! And unlike anything I had read up until that time. There were times I was very frustrated by what I read. Yet, in the end, I not only could not argue with her assertions and interpretations, I found truth and peace in them. The experience catalytically changed my perspective, opened my world and even improved my life in doing so. Today, there is no other book in my collection (of multiple bookcases of various sources) with more permanently housed bookmarks and notations. I could not now recommend a book more highly than this one for self-improvement. It is very positively written with hope and love. Remember that the creation of reality begins with the foundation of thought. Florence teaches according to this principle and touches on elements that can also be found in science and quantum physics, another study I highly recommend.

If you're reading this because you're at a point of seeking in your life, it's a pretty unassuming, economical little book and well worth the return.

read this book and have everything you want

I came acroos this book by accident, I bought it with several others and it stayed on by bookshelf for a long time, a time in which I was miserable and just didn't see any way out. Then one day I ran across it, I began reading it in bed, figuring I would be through it that night since it was less than 100 pages. Boy was I wrong. I began repeating the passages and it was like a burden was lifted off of my shoulders, I cried like I was finally free of all of the negative things in my life and that I was finaly going to get everything I wanted, even if it was not mine by devine right. This book will enlighten you and show you that everything that you want may just make you miserable and you'll regret it if you don't ask for things that really belong to you. How did this book change my life? After being single for a long time and dating all the wrong men, I met the man who was mine by divine right. I studied this book nightly before we met, I was even dating a Doctor and then I met my husband and knew that he was the one. And the wierd part was he had just moved from Cocoa Beach Florida, and I lived near Chicago, and we met in the middle of winter. He told me he quit his job and moved up here because he knew there was a reason. The reason was to find me. So when I concentrate and know that I can have it all, it comes true with amazing accuracy. It's true, life is a game and you need this "game manual" to show you how it's played.

Love, love, love the insights on emotional intelligence. It's such a simple concept, really... that there is a huge difference between book smarts, and emotional intelligence. This is going to revolutionize the way I relate to my intellectual and emotional life. It was wonderful to have my eyes opened. J. J . Eastman is an excellent writer and presents a great deal of thought-provoking content. I like that it teaches you everything you want to know about emotional intelligence. I found this book to be very informational and encouraging if one doesn't "score" high on emotional intelligence. It really explains the difference between being smart and being wise. Furthermore; it says that these are skills that can be learned, but like everything else requires work. The author talks about exceptional psychological principles and he puts it in plain english. This book is the gold standard, well written, and practical. I enjoyed the information immensely; plus this book has helped me understand myself more than I did before. This is the book you want to buy to help you understand yourself and the people around you.

I'm not as intelligent as I thought I was! Such a great read!

You never really take time to think about the difference between emotional intelligence and just plain old intelligence. I always judge intelligence in a person by the way they hold themselves and the way they speak to me or others when presented with a question. Emotional intelligence is what is needed to be able to show others that you truly are intelligent as those that lack it will show their lack of true intelligence in the way they speak and carry themselves. I enjoyed reading this book and learning about the various stages, or ways that you can define emotional intelligence. Definitely a book that I will be coming back to time and time again! Sometimes I don't quite show my emotional intelligence, as can be proven by my wife!

This gentleman clearly stated the difference between intelligence and emotional intelligence. There is a difference between knowing a job and being really good at that job and knowing people, in order to succeed you need to understand both. Emotional intelligence is having self control of your emotions not manipulating others threw emotions. Being emotionally intelligent gives you self-awareness and a better understanding of people which makes so much sense to me. I love this book. I really enjoyed reading this guys journey about getting to know people and becoming emotionally intelligence. It is something that everyone would love to be. Lets be honest!!

Learn to Play Coldplay Melodies on Your Violin!

This book will teach you the melodies of some of your favorite Coldplay songs on the violin. It does come with it's own CD, but if you were wanting to play along with an actual Coldplay CD, you might be a little disappointed. If you wanted to play that random violin part that occurs throughout Viva La Vida, it's not on here - mainly just the melodies and some fillers to transition between them. Great if you want to play songs your friends will recognize, not so great if you are wanting to learn the actual violin part to the song. Overall, a good book!
