Inspirational, motivational play reviewed by teen.

Emlyn William's play,"The Corn Is Green", set in the a Welsh mining town at the turn of the century, expresses the joys of teaching and learning in their purest form. Miss Moffet's instruction and inspiration provides the young, ignorant miner Morgan with the tools to satisfy his insatiable thirst and passion for knowledge. Morgan's resistance and foolish decisions along the way serve to test his determination, values, and belief in himself. Parallels may be drawn with films such as "Dead Poets Society" and "The Man Without A Face", as each inspirational teacher provides a boy with knowledge, confidence, and most importantly humanity. Also, the film version of "The Corn Is Green" with Katharine Hepburn is well acted and shot on location in Wales. For further reference regarding the film, Kate Hepburn discusses her personal reaction to the play in her book ME. Every individual who loves to learn and teach will savor the deliciously inspirational words of Ms. Williams. Although fairly abscure at present, this play would make exceptional reading material for high schools--promoting a positive approach to learning for the millenium.

Thy Corn is Green: A Comedy in Three Acts

The Corn is Green is a simple play set in a Welsh mining town. It follows the struggles of Morgan Evans - a young man who has lost all his family and spends his days in the mines. Luckily, Ms.Moffat, a well educated woman, moves to town with the goal to educate the boys of the mining community. She shows a particular interest in Morgan Evans. Through his education, Morgan begins to show great talent in writing and eventually becomes the star student. However, he struggles with a sudden identity change and looks to Bessie Watty, a resentful and rebellious girl, for comfort. Morgan struggles continue to escalate as time goes by.
The play focuses on working class hardships, but does not truly illustrate the lives of the impoverished. Because it only focuses on Morgan Evans, it makes success seem easy when in actuality, it was almost impossible for someone to overcome the circumstances in which he was born.
The Corn is Green does address the issues of the time period, but hardly scratches the surface. Though it touches interesting issues, it does so in a standard way and does not evoke strong emotion.

The Corn is Green

This is a play set in a small town in a Welsh Village in the nineteenth century. The two main characters are Mrs. Moffat who decides to start a school in this city of coal miners, and Morgan Evans who is a brilliant student. With her two fellow teachers, they begin a school in their living room. In a town where every child over the age of 12 is required to work in the mines, Mrs. Moffat wants to change all of that and make sure every child there knows how to read, write, and has options for their future.
The key themes presented in this play are gender roles, equality of education, and the need to fulfill ones goals.
In the beginning of the play, it was hard to read. There was not really much interesting information in Act 1. In Act 2, things started to get interesting and then it was really easy to read and was enjoyable! If you like reading plays set in older times, you will probably enjoy this one!

In today's e-mail world, a renewed importance

Old book - but surprisingly appropriate for today. In today's e-mail society, people write quickly and often without thought to how they can be misunderstood. I have been embarrassed several times because I wrote something in e-mail that was understood completely differently than I intended once it reached more general distribution. Despite the book being over 50 years old - this book might be even more applicable now in today's world of e-mails, online postings, etc... By the end of this, it is very likely you'll recognize some faults you didn't know you had, and an easy way to correct them.

I'm very happy with this book and feel like it's definitely affected my writing for the better. There's a lot of tips in here. The best one-volume history of The Crusades I've yet read

A good, readable history of The Crusades has escaped me to this point, for whatever reason. I was very excited when Tynerman's God's War was released a few years ago, and quickly became disenchanted when I tried slogging through it and realized what a boringly-written brick it was. Couldn't finish it. Runciman's classic volumes, which have been the definitive essential reading for half a century now, are still valid, entertaining reads but have been long since over-taken by newer evidence and much fresher, more-encompassing interpretations. As a read, they're still great fun. As good history, they're quite biased and lacking today.

So, when I saw a shiny new tome promising a complete revisiting of long-held assumptions, I couldn't resist. Asbridge's chronology is straightforward; starting with a quick survey of Islam's rise and subsequent takeover of the Christian Holy Land, he moves to Europe to set the scene of the medieval papacy and nascent western kingships that would bring about the concept of Crusading. In a nice touch, he continues to revisit the contemporary meanings, definitions and assumptions behind crusading as it developed from an event without even a name ("crusading" was a later appellation) to the currently-understood form. From these basics, he moves us through each of the main five Crusades, deftly describing the expected peoples, places, and battles. He strikes a good balance between talking about the most important figures and key battles versus the less-glamorous but as-important topics such as trade and societal makeup that, while harder to make exciting, are very important when trying to gain a full understanding of the events.

Very crucially, he spends as much time covering the Arab viewpoint as he does the Christian. He also properly gives notice to the fact that, while western sources are fairly voluminous by the standards of the era, the Crusades just didn't have a major impact on the Muslim world at the time, and therefore sources from the Muslim POV are much less available. That said, he does an admirable job of situating the reader as best he can in the Muslim frame of mind during each crusade, giving admirable detail on outside pressures that might've existed, any internal dynastic or civil events that had bearing on their interactions with the Crusaders... other histories I've read of this era often fall flat in this particular regard.

He closes with an excellent overview of how the Crusades have themselves been viewed throughout history, both in the West and in the Muslim World; this may have been my favorite part of the book as it's not a topic I've ever seen covered before, much less so well.

The writing style is nice and lively as well. It reads almost like a strong historical fiction narrative, a testament not only to the author's skill but to the inherent drama of the period.

BOTTOM LINE: This will be my only answer for anyone asking for a recommendation on the period for probably years to come.

Excellent Historical Work

The Crusades is a fine historical work. It lacks some of the detail of the author's earlier work (The First Crusade) but it also covers a much longer time frame. I really enjoyed the in-depth personal accounts of the historical figures in the earlier book that are somewhat lacking in this work. I also feel that the author doesn't spend enough time on the importance of the Military Orders (Templars and Hospitallers). However the author does spend a great deal of time examining broader cultural issues which more than make up for a certain lack of insight into individual personalities. The author spends a significant amont of time assessing changing viewpoints over historical periods (i.e. does Richard Lionheart deserve to be considered a hero, was Saladin a true believer in jihad or a political opportunist, etc.) I enjoyed the analysis which is thought provoking and well researched. I highly recommend both works.

Outstanding Volume

First and foremost, The Crusades is a great read. From page one, it pulls you in with a narrative that reads more like a great adventure novel than true history. I for one, did not know much about the Crusades prior to this. As i progressed, I found myself investigating more and more details from other sources to further gain insight into the battles and backstory. That is not to say there are not plenty of details in the book as it is. It is very rich. The way Asbridge divided up each piece of the story really worked to make the journey concise, literate and educational. For a fan of history, The Crusades is as good as it gets.

About the Author
Dr. Binh Nhu Ngo is the Director of the Vietnamese Language Program in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University and has been teaching Vietnamese there since 1992. He was born and educated in Hanoi, and earned his Ph.D. in linguistics from the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. He has taught Vietnamese and linguistics at Moscow University, and since 1992 he has taught at the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) and at a number of universities and colleges in the United States. He has served as the Vice-President of the Council of Teachers of Southeast Asian Languages (COTSEAL) and represents Harvard University at the Group of Universities for the Advancement of Vietnamese Abroad (GUAVA). His other books include Speak & Read Vietnamese (Simon & Schuster) and Continuing Vietnamese (Tuttle).

Good for people willing to put in a lot of effort

I'm startled by the reviews that are on this book. I am Vietnamese-American, and I wasn't raised speaking Vietnamese. I'm a heritage "speaker" which means that I can understand most of it, but I'm absolutely dreadful at pronouncing Vietnamese words and I didn't learn to read and write it as a child.

I finally buckled down in April to work on my Vietnamese. I looked at the reviews of this version of the book as well as other versions. I had my mother (who is 100% Vietnamese) sit down and try to teach me from what we could see in the Look Inside. We bought the book as a result.

Was it a struggle? Oh, absolutely. But my Vietnamese has improved by leaps and bounds.

To be successful with this textbook:
1) Have a native teacher with you. This book is pretty much incomprehensible to anybody who only speaks English and is trying to teach himself. Bonus points for having a native teacher who speaks the Ha Noi dialect. My parents grew up in South Vietnam (for obvious reasons), so they don't actually speak the dialect in which this book is written. Most of the time, it's not a big deal (generally, Sai Gon and Ha Noi dialect speakers can grasp what the other dialect's words mean), but there were a couple of times where both my parents were surprised by some Vietnamese words which were totally new to them.
2) Have a ton of patience. Just because you read the dialogue doesn't mean that you'll understand what's going on in it. The vocab is placed after the dialogue in each chapter, and when they start putting in narratives, the vocab is after those, too.

I think that if I didn't already understand spoken Vietnamese, learning from this book would've been substantially more difficult. I guess I'd just advise working at a slow pace. This book is used for Year 1 of Vietnamese at Harvard (the author is a Harvard employee), and anybody learning from it should expect the work to take 9+ months.

My mother also used to be a French teacher, so she's comfortable taking the role of a language teacher. I learned to read, write, and speak French when I was 7. I've formally studied French, Spanish, Latin, and Mandarin. I have a degree in Spanish. I've learned a smattering of Portuguese and Italian as well, enough to get around. Vietnamese is my eighth written language, I guess, and it's hard (but still a lot easier than Mandarin). I'm really dreadful at tones.

Don't pick up this textbook and expect to become fluent in Vietnamese in a day. It's a lengthy process that will take time, dedication, and a lot of studying. If you're not willing to put in the work, don't buy it. But if you sincerely wish to learn Vietnamese and are willing to put in a lot of effort, pick it up.

My girlfriend is Viet, and she mentions this book starts off by already taking in Viet. But don't focus on how to pronounce all the tones of Viet easily for beginners. They do in the back but it's soo poorly done, I had a hard time my self, this book is really confusing to use this book as a learner with 0% knowledge of Viet. I wish I never bought it,

The book "Podcasting: Do It Yourself Guide by Todd Cochrane"
is a great book. I wanted to learn how to make MP3's so that I could make some for authors to use to promote their books. This book helped me to accomplish this and sure took the frustration out of my learning experience. I now have my MP3's made and have downloaded them on my computer and am now learning how to use my WS_FTP program so that I can put them on a web-page so people can click on them to listen to.

I am very appreciative and thankful for this great helpful book and I am glad there was a Todd Cochrane out there to write this book as it has been a great help to me. I also want to mention that there is some great links in this book and I have not clicked on any that no longer exists.

Thank you Todd Cochrane I place a high value on this book and will highly recommend it.

Busy execs should get a copy.

Podcasting is a technology that more of us should be using, but sadly we're not. It's a little like dial-up in 1996: remember Trumpet Winsock? Todd's book goes a long way toward showing you you can quickly participate in podcasting.

For the busy exec or marketing manager this do-it-yourself guide has two benefits. First, (you) don't have time anyway, and this book is a quick read. That's good for you. Second, it shows you step-by-step how to create a low-cost, effective podcast. That's good for your business.

If you're a programmer looking for inner secrets, this book is NOT for you. If however you're part of the other 95% of the business world and would like to find out just how easy it is to get into this new media format, buy it. You won't be dissapointed.

Podcasting for non-Geeks

I'd given up!

I'd read about the ease with which podcasts could be created. I'd heard a number of podcasts that offered interesting content. But how to get from here (knowing nothing) to there?

Audio books I'd previously bought (hoping for help) appeared to have been written for people who already understood the basics. The audio-tech for a boy-band, for example. That certainly wasn't me.

I needed the 1-2-3 approach.

1. What is the "it" that's needed?

2. What does "it" do?

3. How do you make it work?

This is the first book on audio production I've found that was basic enough to give me the answers I needed. Perhaps it's too basic for most podcasters, but at my level of expertise, I wouldn't hazard a guess.

What I can say is that if you're like me, a rank beginner, this is the book for you. Answers the questions a beginner will ask in simple, understandable terms. No dazzling you with geekspeak here.

About the Author
J. Archer Harris received his BS in Mathematics (with honors) from Denison University in 1973 and his MS and Ph.D. in Computer Science from SUNY at Stony Brook in 1975 and 1978. He currently is an associate professor of Computer Science at James Madison University where he has taught since 1985. His interest include operating systems, UNIX, networks, and computer science education. Dr. Harris has also taught at Southern Illinois University and his consulting activities have included working with Tandon Corporation, the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, BDS Corporation, TransAmerica Telemarketing, and Shenandoah Electronic Intelligence. John R. Cordani received his BS in English and Education from the State University of New York, College at New Paltz in 1969 and his m.Ed. and Ed.D in administration and computing from Teacher's College, Columbia University in 1983. He currently is an associate professor of Computer Science at James Madison University. His interests include operating systems, databases, and information security. Dr. Cordani has also taught at Eastern Michigan University, Adelphi University, and Baruch College of the City University of New York. Dr. Cordani has served in the United States Army, Army Reserve and National Guard as an Intelligence Officer in the area of computer information systems. Dr. Cordani brings extensive experience in working with, designing, and operating systems in both education and government to the creation of this book.

Good at what it does

What it does: lead the reader through the basic concepts of classic operating systems: processes, synchronization, memory, virtual memory, file systems, IO, and security. Each section alternates between text and answered problems, as is usual for a Schaum's Outline. That's very helpful - putting a concept to use on one problem drives the point home better than a hundred pages of reading. The reader who completes this book, working a good number of the problems, will have seen most of the topics presented in a one-term OS class. No problem there.

The book necessarily lacks in breadth and in detail, however. This book doesn't try to be a Tanenbaum, and isn't, so it skips many crucial topics. The interaction of hardware and OS is very under-represented. That includes things like memory-mapped IO, interrupt levels, multiprocessor configurations, and cache coherency. It mentions real-time systems, without discussing the many ways that embedded kernels differ from Windows. It discusses priveleged instructions, but skips context switching between privelege levels. The section on virtual memory skips a lot - how it interacts with a system's process structure, multiple address spaces, shared pages, reasons for non-pageable memory, and more. It brings up ancient topics, like swapping and overlays, that have just about no significance in major commercial systems. Having brought them up, it fails to mention why they're no longer relevant.

But there's only so much you can cram into a 228-page summary. The content is worth three stars at best, but I give it one more for (mostly) meeting its goals.

Excellent supplement

I have over 10 Schaum's guides for my various courses. I would say this OS guide is perhaps the best one along with the Seymour Lipschutz's erudite "probability" (not to be confused with Murray R. Spiegel's befuddled attempt for Schaum's).
The last reviewer's comments seemed unwarranted especially since this book has more then enough problems on semaphores even if it's not as strong on file systems. This book is spot on covering the important parts of the classic operating systems curriculum from the sublime Tannebaum to the feckless Nutt. This book has an abundance of sample problems from all the major topics: File Systems, Interprocess communication, Device I/O, Networks, Security, and the dreaded Virtual Memory. Besides this the author covers algorithms, from the Philosophers to Bankers, from Hard drive c-scan to Paging LRU. I find the author easy to understand, complete, and very much in tune with what you will likely be tested on. I can honestly say this 200 page book was more valuable to me then the pescribed text.

Mediocre book, disappointing

I was looking for a rigorous review to supplement my Operating Systems course and I found that this book certainly fell short of that. I wanted more practice for the kinds of questions we would get on exams, but many of the topics addressed were treated at too simplistic of a level.
I also would have have preferred a range of examples dealing with topics like semaphores and mutual exclusion, deadlock, file systems, but instead all the sample questions were disappointing and I found myself actually wasting time with this book. It would have been more productive to have just stuck with the textbook. Usually Schaum's does a good job, but I think they seriously fell short with their Operating Systems book.

Lots of Heart and Unexpected Heroes

LOST BOY was a great story with lots of heart and unexpected heroes. Ryder Strong and his mother Ruby have always been a team. They haven't had much money; his mom works as a maid in a hotel. But they have always had each other. Ryder is a good baseball player but his mom wants him to concentrate on his school work. One day, after a game, they have an argument and his mom is hit by a truck. She is in serious condition and needs to have a couple of new heart valves really soon, if she is to survive.

Here's where the first hero comes in. Doyle McDonald was one of the first firemen on the scene. He is the one who began CPR on Ruby. And, when he learned that Ryder was alone, he stuck with him to take care of him. He took him to the hospital and helped get him in to see his mom. When he found out that she needed an expensive operation, he comes up with the idea of doing a fundraiser. However, he didn't know that he couldn't just hold one. There were hoops to jump through and time was not on his side.

This brings in the second hero. Mr. Starr has lived across the hall from Ryder and his mom and has been an emergency contact. But Mr. Starr is in a wheelchair and suffers from fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva which makes him pretty much helpless physically. He is also really grouchy. He is the one who suggests that Ryder try to find his father to see if he can help.

Ryder's only clues about his father are a signed baseball and a mushy love letter that his mother had hidden away in a shoebox in her closet. When he goes to the hospital, his mother in her drugged grogginess says the name Jimmy Trent, which provides another clue. Mr. Starr was an investigative reporter before he became ill. After some tracing, they learn that Jimmy Trent is not a pitcher for the Atlanta Braves.

Ryder and Mr. Starr take off for Atlanta to try to contact him to see if he will give them the money for the surgery. However, getting to see a famous baseball player isn't easy and the pair has lots of adventures and difficulties before they can actually talk to him - and find out that he isn't much of a hero at all.

The story was very engaging. I couldn't put it down. I loved Ryder's perseverance as he tries to do whatever he can to save his mother's life. I loved the grouchy Mr. Starr. Fans of contemporary middle grade fiction who like some sports in their stories will enjoy this one very much.

Plenty of action and Mr. Starr will really grow on you

Ryder and his mom live in New York. They're happy, but just get by on the money she makes cleaning toilets. Ryder is protective of her, so much so that he has developed a pattern of turning down invitations from the kids on the baseball team he's on. He gets more of these now that he's blossomed into the best player on the team. He loves baseball and his dream is to be in the major leagues.
Every time he mentions it, Mom freezes. She keeps telling him he'll become a doctor or a lawyer. She also refuses to tell him anything about his father. On the way home from a game, they're arguing about his latest refusal to attend a sleepover at a museum with another boy, when he jerks away from her and she stumbles into the street where she's hit by a vehicle. Everything becomes surreal for Ryder. At first he can't believe what's happening, but when one of the firemen takes him under his wing, Ryder becomes very upset and guilt-ridden because he blames himself.
When Doyle, the fireman, uses his position to get Ryder into the hospital and learn how badly his mom is hurt, things seem pretty grim. Mom's heart is badly damaged and she needs 2 valves replaced if she's going to survive. An operation will cost $200,000 and the situation is further complicated by her signing a do not resuscitate order ten years before when she was treated for something else.
By this point, Doyle has fallen under the spell that Mom casts on most men. He's determined to use the power of the fire department to raise the money, but it must happen within 2 weeks or Mom will likely die.
Meanwhile Ryder asks his crippled and extremely grumpy neighbor for help. Mr. Starr can barely move, but his brain is sharp as is his tongue and he used to be a crime reporter for a big newspaper. When Ryder shows him a ball and a letter his mom hid in her closet, they start searching to see if they can find Ryder's father who he believes is a pro ball player.
The search involves getting arrested, banned from a couple ballparks, a train trip to Atlanta and more roadblocks that you can imagine. Despite setback after setback, Ryder and his grumpy neighbor persevere and the ending is extremely satisfying. This is a great book for sports fans, kids who wonder about an absent parent and those who love an action filled story. It also does a great job of making a severely handicapped person come to life in sympathetic ways. All in all, a dandy addition for school and public libraries.

Another excellent pitch by Tim Green.

Tim Green has penned another wonderful tale, replete with real characters and a strong story line. This is a darker book than his previous works, and looks at the complexities of a modern teen's family life, good and bad. There's less baseball than a typical Tim Green book too, yet the whole pathway is interwoven around the sport. Clear personalities drive the action, and emotions are sometimes exciting, sometimes raw. It's a piece of real life that just fits.
